Update on the riot police attack on the gathering at the GADA

On 16/03, we gathered outside GADA, after the arrest of our comrades in Victoria Square where the cops in an organized operation against refugees and migrants bullied and arrested those who tried to stop them. Among the 14 arrested is a comrade active in the Community of Squatted Prosfigika. The gathering of about fifty people was attacked by the cops with aggressive characteristics after our comrades refused to leave their position. They hit comrades with shields and globes, threw people down and kicked them.

As we were returning to our neighborhood after the gathering, cops blocked our way, forcing us to go elsewhere deliberately, knowing that we were from Prosfigika. Then they chased us to Trichonidos and entered our neighborhood. Our comrades defended our community by making it clear to the cops that the Prosfigika neighborhood will never be a breeding ground for bullying and threats. People who were already in the neighborhood opened the doors for the comrades, the corresponding positions were taken, while at the same time they were heard by their radios to retreat.

If we do not resist in all neighborhoods, our cities will become modern prisons!

We stand with migrants, deportation to cops and Nazis!

Small-kidnaps from the cops in Prosfygika on 23/2

Small-kidnaps from the cops in Prosfygika on 23/2
In the morning of Wednesday 23/2 two comrades of the community were doing their daily patrol of Prosfygika’s neighborhood, around 5:45 a civil jeep cop car raided the neighborhood and directed towards the two comrades. From the inside of the jeep-car 4 uniformed of OPKE (Crime Prevention and Repression Teams-ΟΠΚΕ) and without a warning they pushed the comrades against the wall and started body searches and of course they did not find anything on them- something that the cops would really like to happen. Then the OPKE left. The comrades continued their patrol and after 15 minutes passed from the body search, two more cars raided and immediately 6 cowboys run onto the comrades and tied them with handcuffs. Afterwards they transported them to the Exarchia’s cop station. They put them in separated cells, controlled them again and questioned them about a stolen vehicle, they understood their stupid mistake and gave up.
So after an hour in the cells of the cop station, they led free.
Obviously they think that with these unrelated small-kidnaps they will terrorise us, with territory power games. Cops you are fooled if you believe that with those operations a liberated ground will surrender, a ground which is founded by the sharp people of the occupied refugee community.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE DEFENSE OF THE SQUATTED COMMUNITY OF PROSFYGIKA ON ALEXANDRAS AVENUE IN ATHENS

Hello comrades,

We address this call to collectives and individuals from all around the world to join the combative defense of PROSFYGIKA against the imminent repression. The attempted evacuation of our neighborhood must be turned into a central event of resistance and a victory against political power and the gentrification of our neighborhoods in the metropolis.

WHAT WE INVITE YOU TO DEFEND:

The building complex of Prosfygika was built in 1933 for the refugees coming from Asia minor.

In the conditions of the time, a vibrant working class neighbourhood with communal characteristics emerged. Today,it is one of the biggest building complexes in the center of Athens, which is still not gentrified and exploited by big investors or the state. It is a place of strategic significance, since it is located between the two ‘pillars’ of authority – the Supreme Court on one hand and the Police Headquarters on the other.

Within this socio-spatial frame, some militants, who were already living in the neighborhood as squatters, decided to organize. In 2010 they initiated the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, having as its central decision-making political organ the Assembly of Squatted Prosfygika (SY.KA.PRO.). A communal body for everyday life and political struggle.

10 years later, the result of this initiative is that the project is a politically unified neighborhood, with numerous squatted apartments, autonomous communal structures like Children House, Women’s Cafe, Bakery, clothes, food and health structures covering the needs of dozens of people, families, migrants, economic and political refugees, of whom many are without papers, old, sick or very poor. The community has at the same time a constant participation in local and international struggles and a great revolutionary perspective.

The community is organizing on the basis of self-organization, autonomy, direct action, common property, social and political equality, liberation of femininities. On these values and methods, different nationalities and religions, different political organizations and political understandings are coexisting and working together to resist and overcome capitalism, state and patriarchy, applying the model of Confederalism, which is the model for any possible stateless society.

As SY.KA.PRO we are participating in local struggles of the anarchist and the wider radical movement within the greek territory. During the last years we have participated in several struggles for prisoners, such as for Dimitris Koufontinas’ hunger strike, where, together with dozens of other comrades, our members were arrested during mass interventions. We stand by the radical student movement which is constantly trying to claim spaces for struggles within universities, having as a core the participation in the squatting of Polytechnic University – a symbol of resistance against dictatorship. We have been involved in many anti-repression struggles for solidarity to other squats and comrades, and we actively defend Exarheia neighborhood from repression and gentrification.

Moreover, with an internationalist perspective, our people have travelled to support the social revolution of the Kurdish Freedom Movement known as “Rojava”, where one of our members, Haukur Hilmarsson “Spark”, became a martyr. At the same time, our internationalist perspective and solidarity entails the hosting of Turkish and Kurdish revolutionary organizations and their political refugees in the structures of the community. Also, comrades from all around the globe are visiting or organizing within our community. Of course these relations include solidarity to projects abroad, with the most prominent example that of Rigaer94 in Berlin.

The defense of the neighborhood is already manifested through the very existence of the community, its organization, actions, events, and our small confrontations with the cops whenever they move threateningly in our ground. And this defense proved its efficacy, during the big clashes against the cops and fascist invasion on 31/10/2016.
At the present time, in case of invasion/eviction, we are willing to strongly defend our neighborhood. And there are many ways to contribute to this resistance. At the same time, every expression of solidarity and counter-information action will strengthen it.

WAYS TO PARTICIPATE IN THE DEFENSE OF PROSFYGIKA:

COMING INTO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

In our community we have spaces dedicated to host, for a period of time, internationals who want to get to know our project, encounter its people, get involved in the common structures, the daily life’s program and take responsibility for an active resistance in the neighborhood. Ιn practical terms, this means to get involved in the ongoing anti-repression processes, to be part of the confrontation, if it occurs during the time of one’s stay, and to participate in the solidarity procedure that will emerge after the repression. An extra support to the plan of defense can be given through technical knowledge and work for barricading, fighting material, alarm system.

SOLIDARITY STATEMENTS AND ACTIONS

We consider the importance of every banner, slogan and announcement as contributing to the political defense of Prosfygika. In a logic of inflicting the greatest possible cost to the state apparatus and capitalist wealth in terms of destruction, violence and social exposure, both aggressive and activist solidarity actions are also welcomed.

THE COMMON REASONS TO DEFEND PROSFYGIKA:

For our project, defending the neighborhood of Prosfygika means to keep its present ground of existence and for its inhabitants to keep their housing structures. To continue more than 10 years of work, organisation and struggles in the very center of Athens, which is under a brutal process of gentrification. However, we don’t perceive this ground as separated from the local and international movement for autonomy and liberation from State’s and Capital’s oppression. Therefore, we believe that a combative resistance and, at best, a victorious one, is a contribution to all the projects which find themselves in this logic, and are politically and historically related.
Indeed, from the battle of Koukaki Squat Community, to successful resquatting operations and high scale conflicts like in Rigaer Straße, examples of collectives and communities of struggle choosing the path of combative resistance are increasing. We saw that such actions destabilise the overwhelming powers of the State, creating confusion and forcing it to step back. Because what we are building has a political and a social value, it is worth fighting for. Because we know nothing will be granted to us, we have to gain it with determination, decisiveness and radical means.

As the Assembly of Squatted Prosfygika, we welcome any participation, suggestion or plan and our ground is open.

We hope for common victorious struggles.

Last news from greek territory struggles

Informations from the perspective of Sy.Ka.Pro

The new season started in low-tension conflictuality with the government despite the fact that during summer huge fires burned one-third of Greek forests. And this destruction clearly occured with the responsibility of the government.

In our squatted community of Prosfygika, on Alexandras Avenue, we run an intense campaign against the repression and gentrification of our neighborhood. We organized several info-events in squares for people to know that the state and the companies want to kick out hundreds of people from the communities houses.
On 5th October, we intervened to the leftist former-government radio station Kokkino and newspaper Avgi with the target to make them publish our statement. We specifically target this party because it is one of the main actor of the gentrification process, pushing the state mechanism to forward its plans.

The intervention in Radio Kokkino lasted two hours to make them broadcast our statement on the news.

We also intervened on 14/10 to the main company owning the technical responsibility: Anaplasi ΑΕ (Aνάπλαση Α.Ε.) having as a president the mayor of Athens Kostas Bakogiannis. After our interventions “a crew” of Syriza officials, ex-president of Anaplasi A.E., wanna be athens mayor, and ex regional president came to our neighborhood to make research to prove that the neighborhood needs gentrification.

This first period of campaign ended up October 16. with a demonstration from our neighborhood to the wider area of Ambelokipi. Even though we were not so numerous, we managed to follow a big route in central streets with full guarding equipped with helmets, sticks, gasmasks. Lately, a new law is getting imposed in Greece which is not allowing protestors to take the whole street but confining them to one street-lane or even in some cases to the pavement, surrounded by riot cops pressuring them. So the demonstrations became very tense.

This campaign is a small preview and a warning addressed to the state, of what will happen if they attack to our neighborhood.

At the same time, another anti-repression campaign was going on “against the obligatory DNA capture” also known as the case of the “14” with the general slogan “sabotage the state data”.
Last year, anarchist students were arrested because they occupied a building of the Zografos University to protest against the lockout of Polytechnio. The police stated that they found in the squatted building a beer bottle with a male DNA samples matching another sample gathered after one of the 6 December 2014 the attack of cops. With the excuse of this ridiculous connection, they want to oblige the 14 arrested males comrades of the occupation to give their DNA. Denying it, they are now under the threat of arrestation.
Based on this case, the anarchist movement, and especially the student part of it, launched a campaign with aggressive actions and public informative events. For the end of the campaign, we commonly organized a demonstration that should pass by all the univerisities of the Athens center. However, the demonstration was directly attacked by the riot cops with beatings and tear gas.

Our comrades participating in the guarding try to resist and 6 of them got arrested, including two of our comrades from Sy.Ka.Pro. Right after, the cops got attacked from a building of private education and then they broke the glass-windows of a printing shop injuring the people who were inside.

As it seems, 4 of the cops where injured. The main part of the demostration ended in Polytechnic University where people made some fuss, trying to provoke some riots. But this occurred more successfully in the Financial University ASOEE.

Our comrades are still free and the arrested ones got released after a night in detention cells. The campaign for DNA now is going beyond the 14 students because more and more militants are getting arrested with the same fictional cases and excuses. Before the case of 14, it was the case of 8 students of ASOEE.

At the same time, the police murdered an 18 years old person in Perama because he attempted to escape with a stolen car. None of the cops involved in this assassination got convicted with jail sentence or serious charges. The Romani’s community that this person were belonging answered with clashes all around the region of Attica. The anarchist movement also tried to react but the repression was very hard. The only good example of resistance was a fire attack on Zografou police station. For the moment, this state murder did not maintain a central place in the movement’s agenda.

In the same context, the accusation for “possession of molotov” turn into a felony (a high charge) through a new law which was amended. Already two persons went sent to jail after an attack to a police station in the neighborhood closed to the place that the young Roma was murdered.

As the last information, we can report the action days which happened for the anniversary of Polytechnio from 15 to 17 of November, the dates of the antidictatorship insurrection on 1973. A coordination of radical groups, among them students teams as well as our community, decided to occupy a historical building inside Polytecnic university, known as Gini. For the last decade, Gini is the central place for anarchist, antifa and others anticapitalist groups to organize themselves in Athens. Last year, using the excuse of Covid19, the government kickout migrants who were living there on a urgent need. Then, they barricade the building to forbid the access to all the parts of the movement. At the end, the access to the whole Polytechnic University was fordidden as the celebration was cancelled. This present year, we occupied the building of Gini during the three days celebration. We organized two days full of events and we guarded the building and the whole University against the police, being ready for a massive violent conflict in case of invasion.

Police mobilisation at our neighborhood

Today 11/10/21 an ambulance of the EKAB came to the neighborhood to treat and receive a person with serious health problems. A police car came with them. The cops wanted to break into the building to get the dog that was inside.

We informed them that they could not invade our spaces, that we were taking responsibility for the incident and that we did not need anything. The patrol officer called for backup, falsely reporting that he was in danger from a group of people moving aggressively against them.

In no time a riot squad of MAT and a YMET (blue Riot Police) approached from two sides the people of the neighborhood who had gathered to prevent their invasion of the neighborhood. Very quickly the platoons retreated when the assembled neighbourhood started approaching them shouting and finally they were driven away under the general outcry they received from the neighbourhood balconies and from the patients of St. Sava Hospital. The immediate numerous mobilization of the comrades/compañeros and residents was done in defense of the community and the neighborhood.

The old dog of the house was removed with our help and our sick neighbor was transported without any problem by the ambulance. The cops once again showed up in the neighborhood only to cause trouble, only to show they were in control, which once again failed.

poster says:

Prosfygika has been occupied for several decades and has been a place of refuge and self-organization for refugees, migrants and activists since the 1920s. Due to the increasing authoritarian formation and the wave of evictions in Greece, Prosfygika is very threatened. Around 400 people with diverse histories (political communist refugees from Turkey, refugees from Moria, Greek anarchists, Kurdish activists, and many more) live together and organize in various ways: communal bread baking, market sales, a Wom*n’s Cafe, and a collectively run kiosk. Prosfygika stands for a neighborhood that is resistant to fascist and capitalist attacks.
Let’s be together in practical solidarity and collect donations against repression costs.

“We are concious of our ability to take our lives into our own hands. We defend the Squatting Movement and Prosfygika (…)
of challenging domination indeed and as a part of social leberation.”

A MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY WITH LGBTI+

Homophobic and transphobic attacks of the male-dominates system continue all over the world. In June, there was a police attack on the pride parade in Turkey, on July 5, fascists and racists attacked the LGBTI+ office in Tbilisi, Georgia, and on the same day, an LGBTI+ healthcare worker was murdered in Spain. Additionally, the Hungarian government presented a new homophobic law against LGBTI+ on July 7.

We express our solidarity with all LGBTI+ affected by these brutal attacks and with all LGBTI+ around the world. We want to underline our solidarity with refugee-LGBTI+, as they face especially hard discrimination.

Let’s destroy the homophobic and transphobic system together!
Freedom to all sexual and gender identities!
Leave no one ever alone!

Intervention & Words of Solidarity to our fighting comrades in Turkey

Today the Turkish government is deciding about the acceptance or rejection of the Convention of Istanbul. This convention could be a step towards a more fair and maybe a less violent “system of justice” in the nation state of Turkey. Through resigning the convention the justice system in Turkey would not be forced anymore to keep at least the minimum rights of women. Which are the basic human rights like the right to personal and physical integrity. In Turkey, every third day a women gets killed because she is a women. The rate of violence against women is rising through the continues development towards a totalitarian fascist regime. Fascism and violence against women and LGBTQI* had been mostly connected in history. If Turkey is not signing the Convention, the regime is once again showing us its inhume and fascistic face.
We are standing side by side with our comrades against repressive and misogynist laws and the nation states which implements them. We appreciate the fight of our comrades in Turkey for all this passed years and it gives us strength and force to see all this powerful and successful movement for our fight we have to enforce all over the world.
We send you our deepest solidarity and power for the continuity of the fight for our rights.

Rigaer94 is alive – An address to our friends and comrades

Thanks to every support that was developed during the last weeks and especially the last two days of preparation and collective fight against our common enemies, we managed to develop the most intensive fighting days that we could have imagined. Days which turned every plan from the state and capital into a catastrophy. A great reminder to ourselves, our collective and its supporters, how important the movement’s networks, infrastructures of solidarity and self-organisation are.
Starting with the defence of the neighbourhood against the establishment of the red zone, we drew the right concequence out of the aggressions of the state and the real estate market, against the people living in the city. The announcement of dangerzones and red zones, where people get easy targets for the police in order to create an atmosphere of isolation and fear, has become normality in this city of the rich. We saw in the last years many occassions where we as those who are targeted by the states attacks had to stand in almost silent protest at the fences, guarded by a militarized police force. Let’s name the eviction of the Ohlauer School in Kreuzberg, the eviction of the Kiezladen Friedel54 and all the other projects as Syndikat, Meuterei and our neighboors Liebig34. This fact can not be tolerated anymore – the people have to rise up!
Therefore, as a result, for more than 48 hours, we managed all together, locally and decentrally to take the offensive into the streets and defend our structures and ideas through militant means and put pressure before the enemies had even started their repressive-operations. We decided not to wait for the lackeys of the state to create another zone where they can easily target autonomous structures and rebellious neighborhoods. That’s why an autonomous zone was build up around the Rigaer94 at an hour the cops did not expect. Streets got closed together with many people and a long-lasting defence of barricades happened, with the means of the autonomous movement . Until the deployment of heavy technical equipment as an eviction tank and two watercanons the police was not able to enter our street. Let’s understand these events as a proposal to the people in the metropolitan field and outside of it, to answer the upcoming attacks. Not only against Rigaer94, also against Köpi and all the other threatened projects and our ideas, as well as any attack of the state and its merely presence.
But the state and capital war is not over yet. They will not only attempt to attack Rigaer94 again but also attack and target every single structure and individual who fights against this suphocated society on a daily basis. We should continue getting organised and expand our networks of solidarity broader. We call for more intensive fighting not only around Nordkiez to reinforce the continuity of this rebellious neighborhood, but also decentrally, in every corner of the city.
Let’s continue fighting all together against the city of the rich. Until every initial plan from the state and capital are ashes!

Alican Albayrak and Huseyin Şahin are released from prison after 6 month!

The two comrades which were imprisoned for helping two political refugees from Turkey are free by being acquitted in their first hearing on 10 May.

Solidarity with refugees is not a crime! Freedom for Alican Albayrak and Huseyin Şahin!

On November 17, 2020, political refugees named ALI CAN AYBAYRAK and HÜSEYİN SAHIN were detained and arrested on the Greek island of Lesbos, while helping two political refugees from Turkey who came to the island to seek asylum in Greece. Both of them are also political refugees in Greece.

The fascist Turkish state has forced thousands of dissidents to leave Turkey and emigrate to Europe and many countries around the world to live their lives as political refugees with their detention arrest attacks against all social segments that are opposed to it, especially socialists and Kurdish patriots.

Alican Albayrak and Huseyin Şahin are two socialists who are fighting for democracy and freedom. They were repeatedly detained, arrested and subjected to oppression and violence while operating in the Socialist Party of the Oppressed, of which they were a member. The socialists, who had to go to Greece because of this oppression and violence, prison sentences, continued the political struggle in Greece, where they came as political asylum seekers. At the same time, they stood in solidarity with political refugees as they fought against the Greek state’s refugee-hating policies.

Since their arrival in Greece but also inside the international solidarity frame, the two comrades chose to stay in the squated neighborhood of Prosfygika, at Alexandra’s avenue. While staying there, in this multicultural community, the comrades had been a great help for community in many ways, by staying active members and also by participating to the assembly of Sy.Ka.Pro.

Alican Albayrak and Huseyin Şahin were beaten and detained in Lesbos Island while helping two political asylum seekers, and were later arrested by a prosecutor’s order. The socialists, who were subjected to torture and violence by the Greek police, were also beaten and subjected to nude search torture in the prison on Chios, where they were later taken. We are concerned about the lives and health of socialists whose personal belongings are not given, who are subjected to constant beatings and violence.

We therefore condemn the Greek state for its refugee-hating policies. As if they put refugees in inhumane conditions in the camps returning to concentration camps is not enough, it also shows hostility against political refugees with its practice of extradition/push-back that is illegal and violent.

Alican Albayrak and Hüseyin Şahin was subjected to violence, detention and arrest because they were in humanitarian solidarity with two political refugees who risked illegal extradition/push-back. Therefore, migrant workers and labourers living in Europe, progressive parties and organizations must now enter into solidarity with Huseyin and Alican.

We call on all parties and organizations operating in Europe, all workers and labourers to protest against the Greek State and to increase the fight for the immediate release of Alican Albayrak and Huseyin Şahin and to end the oppression and violence against them.

It is our political and humanitarian responsibility to grow solidarity against refugee-hating policies. We call on the Greek state to stop these refugee-hating practices and accomplice of the crimes of the fascist Turkish state.

As Assembly of Squated Prosfygika , we call in solidarity with the two comrades and in support with all the actions for spreading the message for their freedom.

– FREEDOM FOR POLITICAL REFUGEES!

– ALI CAN AYBAYRAK AND HUSEYIN SAHIN MUST BE FREED!

Video: The verdict against Golden Dawn

October 7, we saw a big antifascist demonstration in front of Prosfigika and the Court and all along Alexandras Avenue. After the verdict against Golden Dawn, the police attacked this demonstration. See some impressions here:

The Women Café

Prosfigika neighborhood hosts people from the entire spectrum of the oppressed and our biggest bet is to succeed in terms of self-organization into everyday needs and issues of survival, education, medical care and legal support, working at the same time a social and political charter that won’t promote a model of offer – take. It is at stake to move forward together and to conquer a collective consignment in the struggle for land and freedom. A struggle in which the entire interdisciplinarity of the movement’s fights opens. We are poor, refugees/immigrants, workers, unemployed, aged, mentally ill, we are women, and we are alone with children.

Women café is a new structure in the Prosfigika neighborhood, which was created through the needs of the community. In the beginning, we needed to create a reference point for every woman in Prosfigika to know, that she can find us at any time, if she wants to talk. At first, we were fewer, in our last assembly though we reached 22 active members. Triggered by the second incident of abuse that we had to deal within a short period of time from our creation, all the women in the café, regardless of our different starting points or language, expressed their authentic and original experiences and for one more time the political words took flesh and bones through the community. For that we are a café and not a team or a collectivity. Because we did not want to submit a feminist theory in the gathering of the community’s women. Something like that would have come from above, we would not be able to understand in the same way our multicultural Babel and in simple terms, it would be a useless tool. On the contrary, we started from nothing, from a café. From our collective gatherings around an aspect of oppression, and that seems to work. From simple to complex, from down to up, from the collectivization of experience inside a fighting field. One step at the time, but it includes us all.

Specifically, it is a structure that was built upon the need, voice to be given to all subjects as to express themselves, to feel comfortable and free. It is true, that inside the limits of the freed land of Prosfigika, women immigrants/refugees have silent needs of socialization, politicization, education that fade out in the stream of events. However, whatever we do brings us closer. In a gathering for the registration in the public health system, three girls came to the café for the first time. And they will come again. Action brings unity and through our deeds, we will find the theory that express us. Women café as a gathering and as a ritual, beyond the fact that it helped open up subjects that were in the shadow, it also works as a bridge between women and the central process of SY.KA.PRO. It is a channel of communication and a representation that makes the neighborhood even stronger. In order for it to function correctly, all its members need to be in correspondence. Naturally, we face some alienation problems inside our house, but we need to learn to care for one another. One of our basic elements of a fighting community is to overcome these problems because even if there was no state, people would still have to find solutions concerning food, shelter, health, education, organizing their defense. We can’t create the society of tomorrow if we do not built the communities of today.

Women of Prosfygika live under very difficult circumstances. We organize collectively, and we show solidarity to one another without the help of the state. Against the constitutional bodies to the state’s and capital’s enforcement we chose self- organization and resistance. We share experiences; we find solutions to every-day problems. Most of us are immigrants/refugees and have suffered economical exploitation, sexual and psychological oppression, inside a constant and unsure reality. We fight for the asylum, we fight to reunite with our families and we fight so that our children get to live. We are in danger of getting arrested, beaten, die because of a lack of access to the health care system. We are in danger not to be able to be the mothers of our children. Our under-aged children don’t have access to free health care and can’t go to school because vaccines are obligatory but also not given without AMKA. And still, you have to wait, afterwards to worry that you can’t achieve all of the above.

Women of Prosfygika come across a hostile environment of the Greek territory and don´t go to the gynecologist, don´t learn how to read… don’t, don’t
This text is a call for solidarity, economical or any other kind of help. A call that will help us do surgeries that we need, vaccine our children, be strong and give power to this beautiful society.

They asked 3000 euros from K. in order to operate on her in a private clinic for multiple fibromyomas. The public hospital won’t assume.
F. and M. will give birth really soon
A. and R. don’t have papers and need to go to a lawyer. One of them has 4 kids and the other a baby that has only had its first vaccines.
S. has been kicked out of her country for not wearing a hijab.
B. and D. are raising up their children on their own.

And the list goes on and on. We gather every Friday at 19:00 at our “house” and try to bring coffee…

Intimidation attempt against Prosfigika Squat

This morning, August 5, four unknown men broke into a house in the first block of Alexandras Av. They tried to give the impression of undercover police officers and threatened migrant residents that they would have to leave the house. If not, they will be evicted. Greek residents with regular contracts would be allowed to stay.
After some back and forth and the vain request to identify themselves, the intruders were pushed out of the house by the now alarmed neighbourhood and fled. A cop from the local Ambelokipi police station told the neighbourhood that this was not an official police action. The night before, a DIAS patrol had already harassed a migrant living here in the settlement.
Via open channels, an assembly was mobilised for the early evening at Prosfigika to discuss the incident today, who is not alone. There has been speculation in the press about an upcoming eviction, the city is trying to determine the ownership of the apartment blocks and recently workers tried to drill test holes for an underground car park.
Shortly before today’s meeting started, several DIAS and DELTA units provocatively drove up in front of the buildings to intimidate those present.

Solidarity with the Uprising in the USA

Shopping Mall entrances are guarded by the tan fatigued soldiers of the national guard. Once you enter you can’t leave, you must shop forever. Parks that one couldn’t have imagined a demonstration in are now the gathering point for a riot, the slogan that rings above the crowd is a call of “Abolish the police!”.

Even though one is facing down an army there is a clear sense of hope, as if this fucked up murder had finally wiped away the fog of ignorance, inaction, and fear. Suddenly one can talk to anyone in the street. The society which had ignored this problem, despite the cries of a people institutionalized, murdered, and kept in ghettos, has finally allowed itself a mirror.

Everyone outside seems to have chosen a side, with the cops or against them. Since its inception America has been a project founded on racism. First based on the theft and murder of the indigenous people who lived on Turtle Island, and then based on the chattel slavery of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. In this muck of violence and racial domination, the institution of policing was born.

Since then, the police in the US have been an example of racial discrimination, insane incarceration practices, white supremacist violence, and the enforcers of a brutal class monopoly. With the murder of George Floyd the situation has changed, the years of brainwashing and manipulation imposed on the population through mis-education, propaganda, and fake-history has been lifted. Finally reality seems to have shattered the screen of spectacle. We look on in amazement and pride that the people of the US are fighting against one of the most powerful police apparatus’s to ever exist in human history. We feel solidarity in our hearts as we recognize the struggle they are undertaking. We feel rage as the same types of police injustices there are enacted here. We are the squatted project called Prosfygika, which houses 500 people from every walk of life. Black, brown, refugee, migrant, anarchist, we all work here for a common struggle: that of making community.

Greece suffers from the torments of racist policing, where migrants are stopped on-sight, and moved silently to prisons and concentration camps just because they came from the wrong place or because they didn’t have the right scrap of paper. People are disappeared from the streets, or forced into the black market, or killed inside of police stations, all of which are enforced and perpetrated by the racist police system. Racist police violence is rampant, and is one of the reasons why our squatted housing project is under threat. We call on all to act in solidarity with the people of the USA, and to act where they are: in the same struggles the people in the US are fighting in. Against racism, white supremacy, the injustice of a system which necessitates prisons, and police and state violence. We stand in solidarity with the struggle for black liberation in America and throughout the world. We stand against the police in all of their manifestations. We stand with all people who take their life and their world into their hands in the struggle for freedom.

On Tuesday 9th of June, we dropped a banner in solidarity with George Floyd and all of those fighting on the 1st block of our squatted community on Alexandras Avenue. Rest in Power George Floyd! We won’t let your death be in vain! Abolish the Police! Destroy State, Capital, White Supremacy, Fascism, and Patriarchy! For Freedom, Self-Organization, and the Power of the People!

Discussion and Info-Event with comrades from Anarchaqueerfeminist Squat Liebig34

In the next weeks, the police will try to evict the squat Liebig 34 in Berlin. The collective is resisting and preparing themselves to make the eviction a huge disaster for the Berlin authorities. Also, other autonomous spaces in Berlin are under threat. We want to show some videos about the squats and the eviction of Mainzer Straße 1990 (a squatted neighborhood similar to Prosfigika that got evicted November ’90 after 3 days of riots). We want to share experiences and discuss about different ways of resisting and defending our spaces.

*There will be a bar for support to the community

*THURSDAY 30/07/20 21:00 Community of Squatted Prosfygika, Xiniados street

3 attempts + 1 ultimatum = WE CARRY ON TOGETHER

After 3 attempts so far to seize the occupied Prosfygika of Alexandras Avenue, with various excuses covering up the cannibalistic destructive fury against the resisting social fabric that’s taken root in the area, as well as 1 ultimatum to evacuate, the Community of the neighbourhood is still going strong as it has for years, on the road of the collective struggle for survival, dignity, equality, freedom, solidarity, and comradeship among its poor and oppressed residents and not only them.

In difficult times, with social dynamics hostile to every construct of resistance, the Community of the Occupied Prosfygika of Alexandras Avenue emphatically states that the maths of capitalist plunder is just NOT ADDING UP! Defying threats of redevelopment and repression, it’s still fiercely working to widen the paths where the oppressed can walk together, with collective care for problems and needs—and not just within its mosaic of residents. Besides the already-existing self-organised structures (assembly space, collective kitchen, collective skipping, collective internet, works for building and network maintenance), it’s now opening the window of self-education to the world beyond the neighbourhood. The greek classes that have been going since last year are now ready to function on an almost daily basis: “We live together, we also learn together”.

– This week, classes continues on Wednesday/Thursday 6:00pm, and from next week Tuesday/Friday 4:30pm, Wednesday/Thursday 6:00pm.

PUBLIC DENOUNCEMENT FOR MY ABDUCTION AND DETENTION BY THE ANTI-TERRORIST POLICE ON 9/11/2019

von Dimosthenis Karavoltsios:

“-Some of the incidents that happened on Saturday 9/11/2019, have already been known since the “wellwishers” of the media had shelled everybody with the news of the day for the arrest of the so-called by them Revolutionary Self Defence group. However, some other about the character of this opperation, that means about the hunting of commrades and the busting of tens of houses with a terroristic way, had been left aside, as “collateral losses”…

-To take the story from the beggining, the same day, around 12:00am, and while I was getting out of my residence in Prosfygika neighborhood at Alexandras avenue, heading to the local social center, 50m aside, a horde of man, some of them with masks and some unmasked, terrorists of DAAEB, abducted me and lead me to the central police headquarters. With me, were also taken one female comrade, one male comrade and three neighbors of mine, the two of them were around while the third one was going out of his home and just paused to see what was this “spectacular” situation at the neighborhood. At the same time, one more neighboor was abducted , while getting out of his home. Off course the scene of terrorism had already been very well organized from the night before and more specifically the previous night, at 01:00 pm,, when in the same way another comrade had been abducted while getting out of my home, without anybody noticing what was going on and therefore, he found himself being interrogated for 12 hours and finally was released only 30 minutes after the abducation of me and the rest of the commrades.-

More specifically, reaching the social center of the neighborhood, I heard shouts behind me. As I turned back I saw the terrorists running distraughtly towards me calling me to stop. I moved slowly towards them telling them to calm down and not worry, as I was just walking around and for sure not carrying a gun as they found out on spot and later at the police offices where they checked me. I was probably lucky that they found me in front of people that know me, because I strongly believe that if this had happened during other hours and not in the middle of the day, my comrades would be searching for me for hours at the labyrinths of state and para-state units of arbitrariness.

-From the very beggining of my abduction I asked the reasons why and insisted to tell me if I am under detention or arrest. They denied my arrest and answered it is just a simple detention. They put me handcuffs with my hands on my back and they put me in civil police car, transfering me also like the other commrades to GADA and from there to the 12th floor of the “notorius” anti-terrorist squad. They let us stand, looking at the wall, while still tighted up and one by one they started checking our IDs. During our whole stay at the service we were being watched from masked men and maybe cameras that were around.

-At 14:00 pm I asked them again the reason of my abduction and I informed them that at 15:00 pm I have to take my medical treatment for a serious health problem I am dealing with. Also I informed them that the only recourse that I had against them, was to start immediately hunger and thirst strike, until they informed me for the reasons of my detention and to provide me my medicines. This was not only an act of resistence against police violence towards me as also the least of precaution from the poisoned food and water that the anti-terrorist squad uses to its hostages. I kept this position until the minute I was released, many hours later. I had in mind that this situation, combined with the lack of my medicine, could have bad consequences to my health, however in times like this a struggler has nothing left but his own body. At 16:00 pm, being under pressure from not talking my medicines, I started shouting with all my strenght, asking for tto bring in front of me the man in charge and demanding my medicines. I continued the same way, not caring for the potential violent treatment by their side and letting them know for the danger conserning my health. One of the interrogators, lead me in a room nearby where he told me to sit, while I was still tighted up with my hands in the back. He sat down opposite to me, starting a small interogation that had only one subject, if I know D.X.. I answered that I know him and that he is an anarchist but I don’t know where he is. After this 3minute “friendly interrogation”, they returned me to the room with the rest, telling me that in half an hour I will be released, something that didn’t happen, since they were just bloffing with me while the rest were being released one by one. After I was being held for many hours without knowing the reasons and also without being able to contact a laywer, I was released at 19:30. Finally, no charges against me were pressed and also all of my personal stuff, that earlier had been removed from me, were returned.

-The invasion in my house and the building I live in.-While I was being held captive in the 12th floor of anti-terrorist services, masked men from the same squad, entered the house and started an orgy of terrorism against the residents of the neighborhood I am living in. There was an invasion and research not only in my house but in the entire building. Full armed maskmen, terrorized a mother with her child, almost breaking down the door from the strokes in order to enter, and when she and her child tried to get out in search of a safe place, they brought her back by force, in order to have a witness during the investigation. They also asked her to be present at the opening and search of other houses too, that the owners where not even there. This very same scenario took place in a total of 6 houses including mine, having the classic mentality of indiscreet “collective responsibility”. This is the excact meaning of state-terrorism (reign of terror), the domination over others through terror. This is the profound difference from terrorism that is just causing terror. Because what else they waged and applied the terrorism services that day? What else they did against a neighborhood of proletarians, migrants by stuffing it for hours whith fully armed maskmen? After all the entire previous time, me and also other comrades of Prosfygika neighborhood, we where under obvious survailance as a community of squats and struggle. And this does not consist a single fact. The same is happening to many other social strugglers – recent accusations for planting “bugs” of survailance, even to academics.

-Bring back the stollen things-Returning now to the invasion in my residence, after bringing the entire house up side down, ofcourse they didn’t find the guns, nor the amount of drugs that they counted to be found. Unfortunatly for them for this specific case, the foundings consist of things that have to do with open and public political procedures and actions, or issues that i have no problem to defend publically. The hordes of anti-terrorist services and the attorney collected everything they found interesting, more precisely a big number of personal and political archive material, that only the dirty minds of anti-terrorism services can come up with a way to make them usefull, as they are useless for their ongoing police scenario. During all these, they managed to steal my PC and a mobile phone. A practice, the removal of objects from investigated houses without giving the reason and the legal justification of this action, which lacks legal base. It happens though, against people that are not even charged, and to this specific occassion, for a simple detention, without me being present. Which ethical, political or legal status and legitimation can these type of practices have?

-However, it’s not the first time that the anti-terrorist services invade Prosfygika, having prefabricated false accusations. Almost a same incident happened some years ago by targeting another anarchist, pressing heavy charges against him, that where all rebouted and he was proven innocent in front of the court. However, keeping people hostage, long term torturing and targeting of social spaces through “scapegoats” and “usual suspects” are the essence of the oppresion mecanisms.

-To say the things as they are-The operation of abduction and holding me from antiterrorist services comes on a period of raugh attack by the state and the new goverment against social base, locals and migrants or refugees, who live and work inside greek territory. Part of this attack is the repression against aranchist strugglers and their spaces of struggle but also against the defending institucionary context that is falling apart, such as the working conditions, the university asylum, etc. Already, the scenes from dozens of women and children being pushed inside police vans reminds us pogroms of other regimes, areas and erras. The same also with the invasions in places of struggle inside academical spaces. The most recent lock-out of ASOEE university indicates in the most profound way that a front of a more dark reaction has been formated from the local urban elit. Deep down, the neoliberal and neoconservative goverment of ND does nothing else but to make practice what the writer Naomi Clein thoroughly described at her script “Shock Doctrine” as the politics of looting and repression that the intenational economic and politic elit are trying to impose on societies and their wealth. In Greece, Middle East, in Chile and Africa. It is more than obvious that the first measures taken were the same as many other countries in which the tyranny of neoliberalism had been forced. Monopoly of information, overgathering of power to one person, nihilistic political talk, rough political opression. This way a modern dictatorship is been created, the dictatorship of the 21st century, same like what had happened on the 20th century at the same decades.-Unfortunately, the access to one more black page at the history of this land, which is the goverment of the “Serious Golden Dawn”,was given by the previous goverment of SYRIZA, which didn’t didn’t take any lessons from Aliente or the Wiemar Republic. They didn’t even take into account the ongoing struggles in Latin America, where coups and intervensions come one after the other, to overturn the people’s gains so far. Today, the fights that the greek social base has to give in order to upturn the dystopia which advances, will have to be incomparingly stronger. The worst of all, however, will be the dihumanization attempting to be burrowed inside of people, making the script of the big writer Kazantzakis “Christ recrucified” getting revived as a modern nightmare. Consentration camps, murders at the borders, alcohol parties and pork meat barbeques next to hungry people, fascist education. And the list is endless, until the social base stands up for resistance against this new barbaric advance.

-As far as I am concerned-I have never hiden my life and my ideas. Since I was 15 years old I am an organised anarchist taking part to political collectives, social centers and squats and also to the social, class and international struggles on a bigger scale. I come from a progressive family and I grew up with stories from Resistance, hearing that my grandfather was been beaten up in every election day, and my father lived the experience of dictatorship and the so-called certificate of civic stance. Early enough I understood that in this world, within it’s complexity, two classes do exist and combat: the oppressed society and the elit of tyrans opressors. I placed myself as a proletarian to the struggle for social justice, ecuality and freedom. I’m proud for my life and struggles, always at the services of the weak, without any personal gain.

-For these reasons I’m not afraid of false accusations and frame-ups by the state and I’m always ready to defend myself, as well as the basic principals and values of social struggle, which are common for all the opressed. In the same way I will defend my public personal and political relationships with anarchists, no matter the type of gallows that are hunging above their heads, whatever blackmails or deals will be offered to me in order to renounce them.

-With this message I declare that I will continue struggling like before because I have “hunged my cape” since a long time now, full of passion for freedom and love for the fellow men and mother nature. Because I have nothing to lose but my chains. If the wannabe persecutors want to find me, they know very well where I am.”

Urgent Announcement of Assembly of Squatted Prosfygika Alexandras Avenue

— english version below —
— deutsche Version unter dem Text —

Urgent Announcement of Assembly of Squatted Prosfygika Alexandras Avenue

Prosfygika is a complex of houses (179 in total), 14 yards, in the center of Athens. The location of the neighborhood is very central: amongst the central police station, the central court of Athens, the football stadium of Panathinaikos F.C., and two hospitals (Elpis, Ag. Savvas). The biggest part of Prosfygika neighborhood is inhabited by squatters.

Since 2002, when the new circle of oppression and looting has began, having as an excuse the upcoming Olympic games and the general restoration of the city, the efforts of the state to retake the neighborhood hadn’t stop.

During all these years there have been several failed attempts selling/desertification our neighborhood, that had been pushed back, due to the recognition of the neighborhood as national heritage monument and for the architectural importance of it. After this, followed an intended undermining of the neighborhood, combined with the exploitation of the empty spaces by small drug gangs, who were working under the protection of police.

Against these new plans of the oppression, the squatters, that entered and who worked inside the neighborhood, gave a first answer. Some of these people, later, formed the community and also the assembly of the squatted Prosfygika. Their actions complete now 10 years of presence and have given life to the neighborhood. The self-organization, the 400-500 stable inhabitants, the communal structures (assembly space, collective kitchen, collective skipping, col. ovens, col. internet, kindergarten, col. coffee shop), had turned the neighborhood into the biggest squat community inside Greece borders, in numbers and in space, having at the same time presence in social-class and international struggles.

However, besides the head on efforts of the state mechanisms, there had also been other strategies of demolishing the resistance and collective struggle of the squatters’ inhabitants life: cutting electricity/water, political courts against squatters etc. An important role to all this played, also, the results by the inner troubles that were created inside the movement, not only with the oppression against the squats during the right wing government of Samaras, but also with the arrival of the “left” government of SYRIZA.

All these mentioned before, had as a result the different moves of oppression with the parallel losses or desertions from the neighborhood (2012, 2015, 2018), with most important situation the attempt of entering inside on 31/10 &1/11/2016. These conditions are something that the state and political parties mechanisms know to take advantage very well.

Inside all these years, the community and assembly of Prosfygika (Sy.Ka.Pro), as well as the new comrades that enhanced with their participation, commitment and consistency, tried to keep alive and grow even more the liberated ground inside the neighborhood. Through the fights that have been given, the collective structures and relationships that were created and the liberation of new empty houses, today we have reached the goal of community presence in all 8 blocks that consists the neighborhood.

At the same time, but hostile toward to our struggle, the state’s and political parties mechanisms are moving by depositing new plans for looting and conquest our neighborhood. As everything shows so far, the new attack, that has already started happening, will be the most serious so far. SYRIZA government along with institutional organizations and state mechanisms, has decided to proceed in on intervention of restoring our neighborhood, threatening in the most open way the presence of squatter-inhabitants, that consist the bigger part of our neighborhood (families, homeless, migrants, political refugees and organizations, local strugglers etc).

In the meantime, the threats of sudden invasion inside the neighborhood, had never stopped (17/8/18, end of January, middle of February 2019). Through law and institutional configurations, that however, remain only to the level of threat, announcements through media and other moves, by a variety of cultural and local centers, technical controls etc.

This whole procedure was sealed by the voting in parliament during the previous month, of their new plan. From our side, we are ready to implement the new plan of community and neighborhood for the next years to come, by enforcing the already existing structures and the creation of new ones. However of great importance we found the complete and pluralistic solidarity of the movement, since this final battle for the rescue or not, of a living space of struggle, is something that not only concerns us all, but also will have a cost to all of us.

Through all this conditions, we are working on the procedure of an open solidarity call for support and further enhancement of Prosfygika. In that way we believe we’ll be more ready to defend our ground and houses against oppression. According to our already existing context, we ask for political, living and material support by the people of the struggle, the organized groups and every comrade, having as a goal the formation of both resistance and struggle front, for the defense of the liberated ground of squatted Prosfygika neighborhood and its political, organic and operating autonomy, against state’s oppression and looting.

However, after the latest updates, we believe it’s urgent and necessary to proceed to this public urgent announcement-wake up call, for a possible upcoming invasion/evacuation of Prosfygika squat and mostly in the 1st and 8th block, having as an excuse the restoration plan, the oppression forces will try to slowly overtake the entire neighborhood. By attacking these two blocks, they will create a domino of rearrangements and updates inside our neighborhood, with the final target of her complete fall.

Although the urgent state of this announcement does not allow us a more complete analysis through the topic, that will come with the text for the open solidarity call, it is necessary to remind the following:

· Sy.Ka.Pro. does not rule upon the neighborhood or has a control upon it and didn’t try to do so, with political and material cost.
The role of Sy.Ka.Pro. inside the neighborhood of Prosfygika is to be the committed with consistency part, that burden voluntarily the defense of the ground, as long with the formation of an autonomous and free organized community.
The organizational and operational context of Sy.Ka.Pro. binds only those who have willingly take part to it.

Therefore, we realize as a stake: ·

that the survival or not of Prosfygika from the upcoming attack as an autonomous self organized community of struggle, will define the bigger plan of urban restoration /gentrification of Athens’ center and as has to do with the radical movement grounds. ·
The successful protection of squatted Prosfygika from oppression and looting, is a responsibility that applies also to the whole organized movement and the people of struggle.

For all these reasons:

We declare the squatted neighborhood of Prosfygika in an emergency situation against a possible move of evacuation. & We call everyone to stand in solidarity for the defense of the liberated ground and community of squatted Prosfygika.

AUTONOMY AND FREEDOM FOR PROSFYGIKA

31/3/19 Ampelokipoi

Athens Assembly of Squatted Prosfygika (Sy.Ka.Pro.)

—————————————————

Athen: Wichtige Ankündigung der Versammlung der Prosfygika-Besetzung an der Alexandras Straße

Prosfygika ist der Name eines Häuserkomplexes im Zentrum von Athen, direkt neben dem Polizeihauptquartier G.A.D.A, dem Athener Berufungsgericht, dem Fußballstadion von Panathinaikos F.C. und den Krankenhäusern ELPIS und Ag. Savvas.

Challenging Capitalist Modernity

April 2017

This weekend, members of the Prosfygika community travelled to Hamburg, Germany, to attend the 3rd conference on Challenging Capitalist Modernity. The conference is a bi/annual event that brings together communities and organizations from four continents to discuss and learn from each other on the topics of Democratic Modernity, Women’s Empowerment, Confederalism, and the ideology of the Apoist/Kurdish revolution taking place in Rojava as we speak.

The conference presents an unique experience for militants from Rojava to meet academics studying their revolution (including the surrounding topics of direct democracy, ecology, and women’s liberation), as well as a wide range of groups that are adopting Apoist theory (social and political modes of organization, as inspired by the writings of PKK founder and Kurdish Political Prisoner Abdullah Ocalan) and doing solidarity work in Europe, as well as North and South America. Prosfygika falls into the latter category, as we are a community that seeks to jointly decentralize ourselves, and interact with the outside world as a horizontally-organized collective, as well as providing support for the Kurdish Community in Greece, and pushing for greater support for Rojava in the Greek Anarchist movement. We also see our use of militant insurrection against the Capitalist Greek Nation-State as a show of solidarity with Rojava, and the anti-Capitalist Modernity movement (although, as we found, there are factions of the same movement that shy away from such action).

We held a table at the conference, participated in workshop groups concerning international solidarity, youth organizing, and Jineology (the social science of women that was born out of Apoist thought), and met new comrades from around the world.
As a community, we salute all those who struggle around the world for liberation from Nation-States and Capitalist Modernity, and the movements in solidarity with them.

Antifascist “Guardening”

May 2017

In Prosfygika, we strongly believe in treating weeds like they are fascists, and fascists like they are weeds! They both have to go!!

To that end, we’ve started combining our antifascist presence in the neighborhood with weekly “guardening” sessions. Not only does this mean that we’re out and the neighborhood when Golden Dawn members (with heavy police protection) are passing by, but that we are using our time to improve the space that we live in and love. People who would only be comfortable in one space or the other also get the chance to interact in common work, meaning that the fiercest warriors are hanging out with the littlest kids!

Current projects are focusing on cleaning trash, clearing weeds (and prickly stickers), sprouting herbs and tomatoes, and bringing in hardier plants that can survive the rocky urban soil!

ANNOUNCEMENT – CALL SOLIDARITY & DEFENSE FOR SQUATS AND EVERY GROUND OF THE STRUGGLE AGAINST OPPRESSION

On 13/03/2017, the regime’s assault battalions stormed into two occupied areas, the Villa Zografos and a squat housing refugees and immigrants in Alkiveiadou Street. To law enforcement mechanisms and their political superiors, squatters are not separated. Both the social squats, such as Villa Zografos, and immigrant housing squats, as in Alkiveiadou Street and political squats are to be eradicated from the new urban environment.

The new architecture of European states and dioceses militarily imposes oppressive and exploitative regimes. For anyone who does not accept this there is a place in works camps, the social margins, in concentration camps, prisons, or they can be exterminated.

Upgraded operations and designed invasions, similar in type to the Thessaloniki last year, show the unity of objectives and overall planning of the regime. They show the long-term suppression of the plan which involves the whole range of tentacles of state and capitalist machine. With the ’12 invasion in Athens as a guide, arch-executor Kaminis and other dregs of the urban world (institutions, companies, church, cops, judges, media), attempt to plunder what the struggle has won in recent years. The decline of the movement and our internal weaknesses are the appropriate ground for suppression and invasion.

“The squat is one of the truly liberated territories of the social, class and political struggle. They act in an integrated and organic way within the broader social field, social centers and places of political struggle.”

There are both a common reference point for those oppressed and persecuted by the state and capital, and also provide a lively social liberation perspective. Our communities are marching along with the overall movement for the fight against tyranny.

“Today more than ever we need to enhance quantitatively and qualitatively liberated areas and territories to expand their presence to the ground with real social needs, disputes and struggles. The refusal of the illusion of islands of freedom in a world ablaze, the compromises through which the authorities blackmail us, and the illusion that we can continue to exist without constant struggle in our communities against the culture of domination and its mechanisms are basic prerequisites for the overthrow of the material and existential quagmire through subversive self-organization.”

”Our task in the new period is to strengthen the organic and functional relationship of the liberated-squatted places of struggle… comprehensively with the aim and purpose of establishment of the Community Partnership for defense, coordination, and dissemination in the social field. The full and comradely solidarity is our most valuable weapon. The right and the rage, our most reliable friends. Current conditions of material poverty and human coercion require squats to create revolutionary change and redistribution for improved social conditions. “

Syntagma: Intervention Against the War in Syria

April 2017

The Assembly of Anarchists and Migrants Against the War in Syria staged an intervention in Syntagma Square to protest the escalation of violence in the Syrian Civil War. Protesters gave texts and played music to inform the public about large scale attacks in Syria by the Assad Regime and by US Forces.

Prosfygika has been an active participant in the Assembly Against the War in Syria, and members of the community came down to support the action, and protest the ongoing violence.

Antifa March in Ambelokipi and Panormou

April 2017

Members of the Prosfygika community picked up the call of local antifascist collectives to join a demonstration against Golden Dawn and autonomous fascists in the Ambelokipi neighborhood on April 12. Over 100 people, including people from other neighborhoods who came in solidarity marched outside local fascist hangouts and headquarters. The fascists were nowhere to be seen, but locals greeted the march with enthusiasm.

We marched with the message that the streets are for the people, not for pigs and not for fascists! The message continues to reverberate with the people of Ambelokipi, and the organized collectives in the neighborhood.

PROPOSAL FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF EXARCHΕΙΑ

On 06/12/2008 the occupying police forces murdered 15-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos. This murder was not an isolated incident, as noted in popular opinion, strengthened by state run media; but the expected result of political and economic power imposed on the weaker classes. The murder of the young fighter that stood against society and the state that created it, show openly that there is no tolerance for those who make the decision to self-organize, and to fight back for social liberation.

The escalation of class antagonisms (both intense and gradual) in that period, and the attempts to destabilize the regime by the insurgents forced kyriarchs to defend their privileges with tooth and nail. From the assertive marches of students of 06-07 until the murder of Grigoropoulos on December 08, the rage and social discontent against the police system directly targeted those are responsible for maintaining the system of imposed oppression and poverty. Anger emerged publically through dynamic demonstrations and strikes, in the main streets of the city and in smaller clashes with the police and emergency operations. The massive and consistent presence of those who could not be integrated and subordinated to the neoliberal project of the dominant, forced the mobilization of warfare tactics and terrorist strategy on the side of the repressive system.

The new state strategy attempts to weaken the radical horizontal movement, which seeks social liberation through the destruction of state hierarchy entirely. After organizing efforts fell from 2012-2014, SYRIZA took advantage of the weak social resistance to ascend to power, using state-economic factors to stabilize the state’s regime of oppression and exploitation. The new face of repression shows excessive bias- already evident in state terrorism- including the continuation of poverty and the attempts to assimilate the horizontal-radical movement. The leftist State intensifies and prolongs oppression and exploitation, attempts to brand anarchist and communist fighters as dangerous criminals, and holds these activists and revolutionaries in prisons, thus clearing the path for bosses and authoritarians to have total control.

The murder of the young fighters was a straight and unconditional attack by the state apparatus against those who do not submit before slavery, those who side with freedom and not with submission. Exarcheia, from then until today, remains a meeting place for those who question and do not submit to the state and social inertia. The struggle against the power and the state is seen in participation and support of social liberated territory and structures.

The squats unite the oppressed by erasing practically any hierarchical expression and are a direct example of social self-organization, against the monopoly and brutality of the state and capitalism.

UPDATE FROM ANTIFACIST COURT SESSIONS 15/11/16

On November 15, comrade J. Kouvedakis went to court for the incident with DI.AS group in Victoria Square on the day of Imia (01/30/2016). The same day, several comrades were also on trial, after they were arrested on 31/10 for their actions to protect Prosfygika, Av. Alexandra, from fascists and state repression. Their trial has been postponed before. Comrades in solidarity gathered early in the morning and filled the halls of the court.

The Charges (the first comrade):

– Resistance
– Disturbing public peace
– Threating bodily harm against police
– Serious injury of police
– Destruction of property
– Refusal to give fingerprints
– Bearing Arms

The only witnesses of the court were six policemen DI.AS. The two of them ”recognized” the comrade, saying he attacked them with chairs, stones, helmets, bats and damaged police cars and motorcycles. A third, prompted by his partner, said that may he also though this comrade was involved and, though initially he did not recognize him! Based on the file, the driver of the patrol said the arrest was a result of damage to the vehicle. Meanwhile the cop DI.AS who made the arrest said it occurred away from the damaged care. The third policeman cast doubt on the claims in the file saying that the person who damaged the police car had a black helmet, while the comrade in question was wearing a helmet of light grey! The pair who made the initial accusation, as well as the third, made contradictory statements (on file) as to both the conception and the characteristics of the offender. Despite the contradictory data during cross examinations, the police maintained their initial testimony. Photographs, from a news website, were produced as evidence, which quite clearly showed to the police using chairs as a weapon.

At the end the comrade had a chance to speak, giving a statement the exposed political nature of the trial. The expected verdict is not only directed against him, but against the entire anti-fascist movement and its strategies against the fascists and repression. Anti-fascism is war against oppression and poverty, which are born by the state and capital. The global political and economic system that is responsible for the poverty of the people and for the wars of European and American imperialism in the Middle East. The police and the fascists have a common role, namely to safeguard the interests of the political and economic elite, and suppress any attempt by the oppressed class for social liberation.

The Jury continuously interrupted, in order to devalue the political motivations and defense of the comrade. In particular, the place and time of the arrest are directly related to the anti-fascist mobilizations during this period. The arrest took place in an area where refugees and immigrants are housed, on a day commemorating fascists of Golden Dawn, Imia. The Greek government helps shape the global political-economic regime, participating in imperialist interventions, forcibly displacing the people their homes and neighborhoods. Cops and fascists, ensure that the masses are squeezed out of such places, that they do not have the social territory to organize for liberation. Local people, immigrants and refugees must struggle together against oppression and exploitation.

At the insistence of the judge to testify as to his whereabouts on that day, the comrade replied he had taken part in an antifascist march. This started in Victoria Square, where there was already a calling for minimum solidarity with the refugees and migrants residing there. The march was an act against repression and the mercenaries of the state, with the result that part of the march was already mobilized to move against the police forces. He disputed the allegation that the police forces were already in the square because a series of small fights and confrontations had already alerted the march and the police to each other’s presence. The comrade denied the accusations of the police, and politically defended the need for immediate action against state, police and fascists. He closed by stressing that the fight for equality, freedom, solidarity continues in the streets. Wherever they meet, communicate and self-organize, the struggle for class revolt and social liberation grows stronger.

The prosecutor was, obviously, embarrassed during the speech where the comrade recognized the signs of class war – poverty, oppression and dynamics of social liberation struggle. Standing at critical jargon partner against class and defended as the 750 employees! He proposed condemning the comrade to 19 months imprisonment with 3 years suspended sentence on charges of corruption and attacks on policemen.

In conclusion, we can say that those who defend the antiauthoritarian struggle must be aware that we will not be treated equally in courts, even without strong incriminating information. The political nature of this trial was enough to override and support police lawlessness. Unsuprisingly, as the judiciary is part of the state, which ensures the safety of the capitalist system from any actions aimed at destabilization, a system which caused the suffering of all peoples of the planet.

Self-organization, direct connections, and horizontal organization in the oppressed class disturbs those protected by the fascists and state repression. The struggle is given without sacrifices and roses in hands. Despite convictions and repression, the struggle for freedom will always remain open and we need only our will to realize it.

ABOUT SQUATS

Two more years have passed since the first police operation, which launched a barrage of repression and eviction in occupied self-organized areas and communities. Today, one can no longer deny the obvious, all-out and organized attack of the state against a large part of the struggling world, against its structures but mainly against its infrastructure.

So far, suppression has removed a large number of squats from the movement that extends throughout the whole of Greece, starting from the large urban centers and continuing in the provinces, attacking individuals to eradicate the whole. It works not by killing totally and openly the movement’s infrastructure through a Bliztkrieg, but by attacking the specifics of each venture, creating the idea that an attack on one project is a seperate incident and does not constitute an attack on the whole movement. Thus they work over time, grabbing every opportunity for a new attack. This tactic, in addition to its general goal, further undermines the struggler’s morale through a series of unmanageable defeats, confusion and fragmentation, waiting for the effects of repression to fall like a mature fruit.

By combining the tactics of shock (there were periods like December 12 or August 13 where there was one repressive action after another) and multiple open fronts, the state seeks to silence and kill the social movemnts.

Starting with the question “why is the state attacking squats” we have the opportunity to review the social field of recent years, starting on one hand with the undeniable period of misery of the lower and the small-middle-class social strata and a more general economic plot, and the exacerbation of the class competition and anticompetitive questioning on the other. The state is using the economic crisis as part of a broader restructuring plan for domestic capitalism that has as its basis both the looting of social wealth and the elimination of social and class resistance. The attack in the last two years in self-organized places – meeting places – occupations of schools – through means of disinformation, is not separated from the general social and class conflict. At the same time, strikes and struggle are criminalized and repressed, labor relations are dramatically deteriorating, and new austerity measures are imposed on the already impoverished social masses. At the same time new repressive methods are being launched, and the police army of repression is strengthened through their alliance with fascism, which acts as a weapon of the state, followed by an orgy of violence and terrorism against the socially weak and social militants. This culminated in the massive capture of immigrants and concentration camps (Xenios Zeus), the repression of the inhabitants of Skouries through criminal organizations, the assassination of Th. Kanautis over a bus ticket at Peristeri, and the murder of anti-fascist P. Fyssa by the battalions of Golden Dawn in Keratsini.
In the context of a time of evacuations and retreats, there is a fertile ground for reflection of the movement’s reaction in each case, and with regard to the abundance of tactics, the dynamics of mobilization and activation in the world of the struggle, the means chosen, and the final result of all of the above.

A movement without its squats and meeting places, without the real territorialisation and the social roots produced by organizational and political work of the social base, will be a particularly weak movement. Not because the method of squatting is a kind of fetish, or holds the monopoly of the struggle, but because on these fields, we have largely chosen to organize ourselves and build our own bastions of resistance and counter-attack.

The question of whether we can defend our squats is is a positive response to their spread across Greece, but also to their “limited” total number, so that dynamics can be developed which not only create a line of defense against the state’s plans, but also play their own role within a context of a more general social and class counter-attack.

The question of whether we have adequately defended our squat, we can only answer “no”, with a few exceptions, irrespective of their final results. The resistanceswe have recovered and the battles we have fought so far are totally disproportionate to the circumstances and the stakes.

Even the very slogan of “ideas that are not evacuated”, which replaced the project “10-100-1000 squats”, advocates the above. If the ideas are not evicted, then we do not accept any kind of attack, since the state so far does not attempt to suppress our ideas but our organized structures. Moreover, even if their ultimate goal is our ideas, then state plans have declared a futile war, since our ideas, that is, the ones that are in sight, are not endangered by the evacuations, since they can not simply be evacuated . But is that the case? Yes and no. But if we want to be at least realistic, we have to accept that capitalism does not simply fight ideas, since they are cut off from the field of social dynamics and grounded in everyday life, rathey they assimilate and weaken them, destroying their radical characteristics. It is not just our ideas are dangerous, but our ideas in action, and this field is the target of state repression. Every piece of ground that creates the conditions and the background so that these ideas can open the way for a wider material and imaginative challenge against the spectrum of domination, and to re-create strong openings for movement self-defense and conditions of counter-attack.

In trying to find answers to the ways and means to respond to state plans, we conclude that the recipe of a one-sided defense tactic to rescue what we can (the tactic of the static barrier) can only lead us to painful defeat. It removes initiative from the movements, giving it over to the state, who now has the advantage of the exclusive choice of the space and time of a new attack, and the concentration of its forces on certain points, at the same time that this logic in us brings about the dispersion and the substantial weakening of the resistances by keeping us scattered and practically isolated in our individual ventures. On the other hand, with the suppression of the suppressed ventures, we have to fight back together by taking the initiative, putting together the social struggles and channeling our dynamics to the final victory of the radical movement.

ASSEMBLY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA

ANNOUNCEMENT OF EVENTS On 31/10 & 1/11 in PROSFYGIKA Av. ALEXANDRAS

Since early summer, due to the the action of paramilitary murderers Golden Dawn in the Athens appeals court, the neighborhood of Prosfygika, Alexandras Av., has been in a constant state of siege, which has pushed to the limits all the people in and around it, as opposed to the state projects, law enforcement mechanisms, and fascists. The deciding factor of this situation was the decision of the head judges not to accept the political nature of the trial, playing with the balance of power, as anti-fascists and refugees were isolated on one side and fascists were supported on the other.

It is important to note once again that in the neighborhood of Prosfygika, there are living about 500 people, squatters or not, of many nationalities, religions and cultures, the elderly, children, the sick, immigrants and refugees, between two hospitals – Elpis and the cancer center of Agios Savvas. The ongoing effort towards the devaluation, isolation, repression and plunder the neighborhood of Prosfygika, Av. Alexandra from the state and the market, is interwoven with the transfer of the Attica region last summer, the appeal trial of Golden Dawn, and in general the choices of institutions.

All the previous period, from early summer to the last meeting in September (30/9), state and fascists attempted to impose their presence against the neighborhood of Prosfygika. Their original plan entailed fascists in Degleri St. (running between Prosfygika and the Court of Areos Pagos) mixed with the cops, the fascist organizations in isolated Loukareos Street and undercover police as well as green riot cops stationed as permanent “protectors”, forcing the people of the neighborhood (Prosfygika) to “hide away, like mice in a hole.” These police stepped back due to an open advocacy call, which organized the community, refugees and people in solidarity to stand together. By mid September, the small number of fascists who were remained were forced to leave by anti-fascist slogans of this guard. The cops had returned to their acquired positions, ie the pavement of Degleri St., to protect the fascists during their entry and departure to the court, and at the central police headquarters.

On the court dates that fell on the anniversary of the murder of Fyssas, fascists upgraded their presence, as did the police, including on 10/14/16, where squads of riot police occupied Kouzis street and half the streets Koronias and Trichonidos cutting off large parts of the neighborhood. On 31/10/16 they attempted again to invade, and to violently break down the just self-defense of the people and impose their terrorism.

On the same day (31/10/16), at 7:45 a.m., at the same time that 50-60 members of Golden Dawn we approaching the entrance from Degleri St, riot squads invaded from Av Alexandras, attempting to push resident out. 10 fascists separated from the group, invaded from Koronias St, attacking simultaneously. Two people were arrested and then tortured. They were accused at GADA (Athens Police Head Quarters) with secondary level charges, and the trial was postponed to 11/15/16 in Military Courts.

After clearing the nieghborhood, creating a safe space for the fascists throughout the trial, Police turned to Trichonidos St. and tried to invade homes breaking external doors and using chemical and stun grenades between Elpis hospitals Agios Savvas, seriously endangering residents and patients. The organized defense of neighborhood residents spontaneously repelled the invasion. While other riot cops on the GADA side entered the neighborhood, attacking the people of the neighborhood and those whose came in solidarity to guard. From that time until 3.30 pm, there were fierce battles with riot police in the streets, either melee or from balconies and terraces, which eventually forced the cops to retreat. No incendiary materials were used for for the defense of the neighborhood, contrary to the regime’s fear-mongering. During the conflict no one was arrested, but there were several who were slightly injured, and several residents and guards who were taken to the GADA, but were released without charges on the same day. After the end of the conflict the neighborhood of Prosfygika returned to peace, free from the forces of repression and the terror, more united and more powerful than before. The only disturbance was harassment by undercover police the same night to residents of the neighborhood.

The next day (1/11/16), the neighborhood of Prosfygika was fortified and ready to resist against a renewed attempt of repression and fascist invasion. In the morning 15-20 fascists came to the entrance at Delgeri St. and attempted a new attack with stones, with protection from several units of riot police, prior to entering the trial, and were answered with stones from the neighborhood guard. During the following time, and ongoing court cases, there were confrontations with the forces, which remained at a safe distance from the neighborhood. The only exception, was an attempt by a riot squad to isolate a small group of anti-fascists from ORMA who were in the courtyard of Appeal side Degleri. The presence of residents and people in solidarity and threat to record the police prevented this attempt.

As we continue the meetings of paramilitary gang of Golden Dawn at the Athens Court of Appeal, the community of Prosfygika Av. Alexandra will defend its territory by its own efforts and the support of solidarity. A land that did not fall from the artillery of the English capitalists, nor the machine guns of snitches, and continues to stand as a barricade against the world of power, oppression and exploitation.

We clearly and publicly declare that we will not tolerate the exclusion of our neighborhood, which according to the judicial and repressive designs will be extended until the end of the trial, several months later. We will defend our neighborhood with determination and without counting the cost against the plans of repression and fascism.

Close the Degleri St enterance to the fascists of Golden Dawn
