WELCOMING OUR COMRADE ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS BACK TO THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA AND HIS FIRST STATEMENT AFTER 73 DAYS IN HOSPITAL CARE

Hundreds of comrades – just a fraction of the thousands of people who have supported the Community’s great and victorious struggle with all their power throughout the last seven months – gathered in Prosfygika to welcome our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis back to the Prosfigika neighbourhood – the neighbourhood he defended with his life so that life itself might prevail.

Aristos returned to the Community after 73 days in hospital, which were necessary following a 140-day hunger strike, accompanied by a motorbike procession of people showing solidarity.

A huge victory for him, for the Community, for the movement and for wider society, which brings this great struggle to a very suitable conclusion and paves the way for our future victories.

WELL DONE, PROSFYGIKA HAS WON

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

Press Release: Hunger Striker Aristotelis Chantzis returns tothe Community of Squatted Profsygika

After 78 days in hospital and 140 days of death fast: Hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis returns to the Community of squatted Prosfygika in Athens

Yesterday, on the 2nd of September, Aristotelis Chantzis was released after 78 days of hospitalization, most of which he spent in the Intensive Care Unit, battling for survival after 140 days of hunger strike in the defense of life. His return to the Community in Alexandra’s Avenue was eagerly anticipated by the residents, comrades and solidarians from Athens and around the world.
He was accompanied by a huge motorcycle demonstration and a solidarity march through the neighborhood. Towards those hundreds of people waiting for him to return, he said in his speech :

“The only thing i have to say is that the struggle was a collective one, and this is why it was victorious (…)

Also it was a struggle which we had declared from the beginning that we go until the end. Regardless the costs.

That’s a reason (…) why it was a successful struggle. It had faith in the community and in the solidarity of the people and faith to each own goal. (…) Nevertheless repression will exist as long as state and capitalism exist (…) Only if we unite all the anti-systemic forces, we can stand as an alternative that our societies are in such need of.”

Aristotelis Chantzis started his hunger strike on February 5, 2026, and Suzon Doppagne joined in on May 1, 2026, in response to a redevelopment plan approved by the Regional Government of Attica in June 2025 that would lead to the eviction of the approximately 400 residents of the Prosfygika neighborhood. Residents include families with children, refugees, elderly people, oncology patients and their relatives, and people participating in rehabilitation programs. Residents and supporters reject this gentrification plan as factually false and legally unfounded, warning that it would result, if implemented, in the forced displacement of more than 400 people and the destruction of one of the largest self-organized communities in Europe together with its 22 autonomous structures of mutual aid and solidarity.

Backed by a local and international support movement, the hunger strikers and the Community of Squatted Prosfygika have opposed the regional government of Attica through active resistance on the social, political and legal levels in order to protect these eight historical buildings, the community itself and its residents that belong to the most vulnerable social groups. The Campaign to Save Prosfygika gained traction internationally through countless initiatives implemented to address the Greek state, practical support – like a caravan to help with the renovation of the buildings- and the unwavering solidarity and commitment of “those who stand by our side, from your own standpoint, in this just and beautiful struggle” (Statement of Victory, June 2026)

On June 24th, following the City Council of Athens’ official stance of unequivocal recognition
and support for the community, the hunger strikers Aristotelis and Suzon suspended their
hunger strike after 140 and 55 days respectively. This agreement, which was quickly followed by the reveal of the absence of the previously declared European Union funding, is being understood as an important victory for the community.

In the statement of victory, the community states that “It is a struggle that has been victorious from the very beginning, because the only lost struggle is the one that was never fought. It is a just, selfless, and collective struggle—not only for the more than 400 residents of Prosfygika, but for society as a whole. For all of us. For the right to shelter, to life, to dignity, and for people’s right to organize, to self-organize, and to shape their own lives in dark times.”

A few hours after the resolution of the Municipality of Athens – which, after enormous pressure from below, largely covered the demands of the hunger strike and recognized the Community as a collective body and conversation partner – Aristotlis’ health deteriorated rapidly, leading to his hospitalization in the ICU and ultimately to his intubation. The medical team that monitored the health of Aristotelis Chantzis since the beginning of the hunger strike states that the course of his health has exceeded all expectations.

Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagnes` commitment to the defense of the community and its members brought masses in Athens, Greece and around the globe on the streets, in newspapers, in front of Greek embassies and the European Parliament. Since yesterday, statements in solidarity welcoming Aristotelis Chantzis back into the Community have been published.

CALL TO WELCOME OUR COMRADE ARISTOTELIS, WEDNESDAY 2nd OF SEPTEMBER 18:30

After 73 days in hospital, 58 of which were spent in the ICU, our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis will be released tomorrow, Wednesday 2nd of September, from the respiratory clinic at Evangelismos Hospital and is returning to the Prosfygika neighbourhood.

The great victory of the struggle by the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and the hunger strike until death by Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne is a highly significant victory, confirming that the only way forward is the way of resistance.
Our comrade Aristos found himself at the forefront of this struggle, through his hunger strike until death, to defend everything we believe and demand as we build our world from the below.

We call on all those who firmly stood next to us in this struggle to send us welcome greetings for our Comrade, to celebrate our comrade’s return together.

Furthermore we call you for solidarity actions and solidarity pictures to make clear that the victory of the community is all our victory!

For those in Athens, we call to join us at the welcoming gathering at the neighbourhood of Prosfygika on Wednesday 2 September at 6.30 pm, to celebrate our comrade’s return together.

The gathering will take place at the first block of Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, in front of the Collective Café Kiosk.

For further information about the current situation of the struggle of Prosfygika join our weekly update and planning call, every Wednesday at 20:00 CET.

WE WILL WIN, WE HAVE WON

EUROPEAN COMMISSION CONFRIMS PROTECTION OF COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA

Press Release: Athens 31. August 2026

A new statement-answer (E-002432/2026) by the EU Commission blocks the evacuation plan of the neighborhood of Prosfygika in Athens. The European Commission confirms the protection of the fundamental rights of the residents of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

In June 2025, the Region of Attica approved a resolution describing the Prosfygika buildings as “vacant,” advancing a redevelopment project that would be funded through European Union resources within the Attica 2021–2027 program.

Residents and supporters reject this gentrification plan as factually false and legally unfounded, warning that it would result, if implemented, in the forced displacement of more than 400 people and the destruction of one of the largest self-organized communities in Europe together with its 22 autonomous structures of social welfare and solidarity. The Community of Prosfygika, backed by a local and international support movement, has opposed the regional government of Attica through active resistance on the social, political and legal levels in order to protect these eight historical buildings, the community itself and its residents that belong to the most vulnerable social groups.

On June 12, a written question was submitted and signed by 32 members of the European Parliament from different parties (Left, Greens, Social democrats and independent MEPs).Two more questions had been submitted few weeks before by different MEPs of different parties supporting the Community, which were on the same basis regarding the illegal funding by the E.U. of the plan of the Region of Attica and the violation of the human rights of the residents.

On June 25th, following the City Council of Athens’ official stance of unequivocal recognition and support for the community, the hunger strikers Aristotelis and Suzon suspended their hunger strike after 140 and 55 days respectively. Despite Aristotelis’ condition still being critical up to this date, this agreement, which was quickly followed by the reveal of the absence of the previously declared European Union funding, is being understood as an important victory for the community.

On July 14th, four special rapporteurs of the Council of Human Rights of the U.N. published a report(Ref.: AL GRC 3/2026) addressing the Greek Government and claiming that the procedure that the Region of Attica is following through their gentrification plan is illegal and it violates human rights, urging the Region of Attica to respect the international law and its obligations regarding human rights.

Despite the announcements of the European Commission, of the Special Rapporteurs of the U.N.and of the municipality of Athens, the Mitsotakis Government declared an imminent eviction of the community, stating that

“every squat will be evacuated and every squatter will be thrown out . As long as this government exists, the squatters will be thrown out, and because we are generous we will proceed with care for vulnerable groups and children.” (Pavlos Marinakis, 07/20/2026)“

Nowadays, on August 19th, the European Commission, through Executive Vice President Raffaele Fitto, issued a response with the following points. The European Commission’s initial approval of the midterm review of the Attica 2021–2027 program, which includes the “Promoting access to affordable and sustainable housing,” is in an extremely early stage of the process. The response explicitly states that at every stage, all State Members must strictly comply with the obligations arising from EU law and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

Therefore, any government intervention aimed at the forced eviction of residents could constitute a violation of the relevant EU provisions, which would expose the Greek government and the Region of Attica to the consequences of such actions, including the risk of losing all approved European funds.

Furthermore, the Commission states that there is a legal obligation to consult in advance with those residing in the complex, which results in the obligation to implement the Resolution of the Municipality of Athens from June 24 and to negotiate with the Community of Prosfygika as “affected parties.” Until now the Region of Attica has not engaged in any dialogue with the more than 400 residents of Prosfygika which is, according to the Commission, a violation of the EU law.

At the end of the statement, the Commission emphasizes “the need to develop mitigation measures and cooperation mechanisms to reduce the risks of eviction and homelessness.” Furthermore, it emphasizes that eviction without the prior provision of a concrete, tailored, independent, and dignified alternative solution is contrary to European and international law. At the same time, it recalls that the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter require the highest level of legal protection for those at risk of eviction, fully ensuring that solutions are sought.

In its official statement the Community highlights that this position serves as a decisive political and legal tool for the defense of the Community:

“This position states (…) that any violent or coercive intervention that does not involve formal dialogue with the Community of Prosfygika and does not guarantee a dignified alternative constitutes a violation of European law.” (8/22/26)

Regarding the Mitsotakis Government which:

„aimed at dismantling the community (…), we call to strengthen our presence and resistance in Prosfygika and, in the event of a repressive operation for mass actions everywhere, wherever each and every person may be.“ (08/17/26)

INVITATION TO WEEKLY UPDATE AND PLANNING CALL

📆Wednesday 19/08 – 20:00 CET
🔗https://lecture.senfcall.de/sav-loj-48f-nxo

Every Wednesday evening we do this update and planning call to analyze the political situation regarding Prosfygika, answer questions and speak about the strategical next steps of the internationalist campaign and internationalist action.

WE ARE ALL PROSFYGIKA

LET’S BE PREPARED FOR DAY X

August is a period that the state and its repressive mechanisms choose as a prime time and arena for political action. It is a period during which societies and social movements are on vacation and at a standstill. It is not only the squats that are at risk. During the summer and the month of August, a lot of anti-social, anti-labor, and other laws are passed behind closed doors.

As for the Community Of Squatted Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, this August brings dangers and calls for our vigilance. The Region of Attica may have suffered a crushing defeat, the fairytale of European funding may have been exposed, and a broad-based movement and institutional bulwark may have been erected against them, but the Mitsotakis regime continues to threaten with evictions and operations aimed at dismantling the Community.

August has historically been an ideal opportunity for repression, although in the case of Prosfygika, the magnitude of the cost and risk – highlighted by the powerful movement that has developed – warns them otherwise.

For our part, as communities and movements, we must remain constantly ready for action. The ten-day period from August 10 to 20, as well as the entire period until the end of the month, continues to be a time of emergency, requiring increased vigilance.

To defend our communities – and refugee communities in particular – it is not enough that the residents simply defend themselves. Everyone needs to be ready to take action in Athens, in the provinces and internationally, at work, in vacation spots, and in their daily lives as a whole, in order to stop the state’s and the forces of repression’s plans to plunder and destroy the community and neighborhood of Prosfygika.

Throughout this period, we reiterate our call to strengthen our presence and resistance in Prosfigika and, in the event of a repressive operation, we call for the following:

A mass turnout in the neighborhood.

Mass actions everywhere, wherever
each and every person may be.

For a general uprising.

To stop the plans of the state and the government.

To keep Prosfigika as a liberated space of autonomy, self-organization, solidarity, and social struggle.

EVENT SERIES ABOUT INTERNATIONALIST STRUGGLES: THE ULM5 | REPORT FROM THE TRIALS – INTERNATIONALIST RESISTANCE AGAINST ELBIT SYSTEMS & PRISONER SOLIDARITY

Over the summer we will make a series of events about the different struggles all over the world of the internationalist comrades, collectives and organizations that contributed to the victory and defense of Prosfygika. The events will happen both in Athens as also as an online livestream.
This week, we will hear about the Trials of the five people imprisoned for allegedly dismantling an Elbit factory in Germany – ULM5 – and the outlash of repression on them. We will put it in the bigger picture of the new phase of repression that is targeted at similar actions against the genocidal system.

UPDATE ON ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS’S HEALTH

Aristotelis Chantzis remains on a tracheostomy for the 47th day in the ICU at Evangelismos Hospital, suffering from multiple complications resulting from severe refeeding syndrome, prolonged starvation, and extended hospitalization, while continuing to experience severe swallowing disorders and requiring increased intensive support and hospital care.

THE VICTORIOUS STRUGGLE CONTINUES – STAY ALERT

Over a month ago, the hunger strike of Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne ended victoriously, with a lot of collective power from the movement forcing the state to resign from its original plan of eviction.

On June 24th, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and the hunger strikers announced the end of the hunger strike, after the Mayor of Athens, in the last moment, recognized and attested to one of the demands of justice that had become unsilencable over the 140 days of hungerstrike. As the last months showed, victory is not a glamorous finale, not an end of the struggle. It is a consciousness, that allows us to take the necessary steps and grow beyond the position of defense and submission.

The mobilizations around the hunger strike eliminated every justification that the state tried to construct about the legitimacy of the eviction plans. A broad movement has taken shape around the struggle of Prosfygika, consisting of individuals, collectives, social initiatives, workers unions, political parties and many other bodies. This has not only played a significant part in support and, in the end, led to the victory of the struggle, but its has also enriched the Community through countless collaborations and exchange.

The United Nations Organizations, Amnesty International, 33 members of the European Parliament and many other organizations and individuals with social and political influence have contributed to the struggle by exposing to the public, what had been clear since the beginning: that the „redevelopment“ contract of the Region of Attica is not in line with human rights, that no funding was ever admitted by the European Commission for this plan and finally, that incredibly high amounts from EU funds have been used by the Greek State in corrupt and questionable ways.
And as the hunger strike ended, the struggle continues in multiple ways.

The struggle for life continues to be fought daily by our comrade Aristotelis who is hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Evangelismos Hospital since June 22. His health still is in a critical condition but his moral is indestructively high. Suzon Doppagne is reunited with the Community and growing stronger again.

The internationalist struggle continues with immense support, as dozens of international solidarians that came before, during and after the Internationalist Brigade of Victory, show their commitment to the struggle of Prosfygika daily.

The defense of Prosfygika is reaching the next phase:

Now, towards the month of August, the situation is growing more threatening again.

As all means from the state to diminish the Communities validity of existence were without success, it has to resort to raw violence. Through the Greek government’s spokesperson Marinakis, another declaration of war was made towards the Community of Squatted Prosfygika:

“Prosfygika would be the biggest shame in Greece and a community of terrorists, that needs to be stopped before further terrorists are breeded there, so during the current government period.”

Based on the policies and current situation of the government, this narrative is not surprising, though we have to expect also actual material consequences, attacks and intensified repression from such announcements. The summer period is also a time of intensified risk of state attacks because the local movement is weaken a lot. So

WE CALL ON EVERY COMRADE, COLLECTIVE OR ORGANIZATION IN SOLIDARITY WITH PROSFYGIKA TO REMAIN ALERT AND READY FOR DEFENSE!

The ruling party in Greece, New Democracy, an authoritarian neoliberal regime, is tightening their strict “law and order” doctrine it has established over many years, which results in the extention of repression against movements and societies – especially now in the pre-election period. It is a framework meant to exploit the public need for security by implementing increasingly repressive measures into every day life as well as a cheap excuse to shower the movement, and right now with a focus of Prosfygika, with repression.

In the last weeks, this climate has amounted to a new degree of madness: a young man was murderered by the Police, violence against migrants and women increased rapidly, dozens of comrades were arrested with accusations about an arson attack in Thessaloniki and about an attack from 2010 to the Marfin Bank in Athens. The state propaganda is trying to push the responsibility of different incidents directly and without any evidences to the Community of Prosfygika with the aim to sustain the narrative of so called terrorism about us. It is clear how desperately the state is trying to delegitimize the just and righteous demands of Prosfygika and its existence only to cover up its own despicable policies of oppression, control and incarceration.

As Community, we remain undaunted against this threat of brutality and the unsubstantiated claims about us.
The situation confronts us with different possible scenarios.
In all of them, internationalist solidarians are needed more than ever to stand steadfast behind the Community and defend what we have built here – a shared life with universal values and a culture of collective responsibility that bears answers for the greater questions of humanity from our times.

WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT TARGET THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA IN TIMES OF CRISIS?

Today, Tuesday, August 4, around 9:00 a.m., a delegation led by New Democracy MP Angelos Syrigos “visited” Prosfigika, staying inside the community for just a few minutes—in keeping with the usual tactics of New Democracy officials in so many other instances—and leaving as if they were thieves.

A. Syrigos, who has previously spoken out publicly to slander the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, today came and stood in front of the guesthouse for cancer patients and their companions of the “Agios Savvas” Hospital, which was built by the Community itself. Within a matter of minutes, he filmed footage to set up yet another media ploy that will serve the state’s plans for slander, eviction, and repression—all while hunger striker Aristotelis Hantzis has been hospitalized in the ICU for over a month, still in critical condition.

So why, at a time when Attica and the entire country are once again burning—as a result of the criminal policies of the New Democracy government, which bears sole responsibility for the incalculable destruction that has been caused— —does New Democracy choose to send its MP and professor of international relations, A. Syrigos, to Prosfigika?

And why does he, even though Prosfigika seems by definition to be outside his specific area of interest, nevertheless choose to focus intently on Prosfigika and even declare that it is an issue he is “dealing with”?

In any case, whatever the plans of the state and the government may be, the Community continues on its path of creation, social self-organization, and solidarity in every sphere of life—both on its own territory and wherever communities are afflicted by the destructive policies of the state and those in power.

UPDATE ON ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS’S HEALTH‼️

Aristotelis Chantzis is now in his 20th day of hospitalization. As of today, he is tracheostomized and remains in the ICU at Evangelismos Hospital, in critical condition with multiple complications due to severe refeeding syndrome, prolonged starvation, and a prolonged hospital stay.

After months of international protest against the eviction plans of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, the EU-Commission has taken its stance: No EU-Funding was ever agreed upon for the eviction plans.

Athens 03.07.2026: After 5 months of continuous protest, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika achieved a multilayered victory. This week, the European Commission answered the parliamentary question about the legitimacy of the eviction plans, which was asked by 33 members of the European Parliament from different parties. The European Commission, who was supposedly responsible for the financing of the gentrification plan, confirmed the illegality of eviction and the absence of funding; no money was ever granted for this plan, contrary to the claims of the regional government.

In their answer they said clearly: “Greek authorities have informed the Commission that no call has yet been launched to include the ‘Prosfygika’ project in the regional programme ‘Attica’. As no operation has been selected for EU funding, the Commission has not received project-specific information.”

“The struggle has won. The struggle continues.”

This achievement followed the announced victory of the hunger strike. Suzon Doppagne and Aristotelis Chantzis, members of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in Athens, announced on 24/6/2026 the decision to end their hunger strike until death after 140 and 55 days. Prior to this, in an urgent meeting, the municipality of Athens voted for a resolution addressed to the regional government and the Greek state, demanding the cancellation of the eviction plan and recognition the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. Furthermore, the resolution states that all residents of Prosfygika will remain in their homes and accepts the phased restoration of the buildings as proposed by the Community.

Olga Nassis, member of the European Left warns, that “despite on the victory achieved at the municipal level, the danger is far from over. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis irresponsibly attacked Prosfygika, labeling the community a “major blight” and sinisterly stating that “the competent authorities will answer regarding operational matters”. This is a crystal-clear message implying the intent to deploy police forces to resolve an eminently social issue through coercion and repression.”

Other then that, Aristotelis Chantzis is still in acute danger. In the latest update about his health, it was announced that Aristotelis Chantzis was incubated in the ICU due to severe respiratory failures. They announced that all those with political responsibility, especially Nikos Hardalias and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, bear full responsibility for the development of his state of health and any outcome it has.

Over the next 6 days, people from over eight countries will drive together through different cities of the Balkans, in which locals have initiated solidarity actions for the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. Since the start of the hunger strike on February 5th, solidarity movements were built in over thirty cities, covering four different continents. Until now, they announced stops in Ljubljana (3.7), Zagreb (4.7), Belgrade (5.7), Sofia (6.7.), Skopje (7.7) and Thessaloniki (8.7).

Ultimately they want to arrive in the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to support the self-managed renovation of the historical buildings, the maintenance of the 22 structures that are covering the needs of more than 400 people from over 27 nationalities including 50 minors, elderly and people with severe illnesses.

In their statement on the first demonstration of the tour, which happened on July 2nd in front of the Greek embassy, they made the following announcement: “Together with the support of our comrades in Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Albania, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, we will stage interventions in front of various Greek embassies to make it clear that we stand united against the eviction plans, that the struggle for life and humanity knows no borders and continues in every squat, every square, every social center and in every heart of every comrade.

“As an internationalist brigade, representing the global network of internationalists who have fought alongside us for the past five months, we will travel together to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to provide practical support and to strengthen the connections – new and old – forged in the heat of this battle. We will defend the victory of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika with our words, our actions, and our physical presence.”

Updated route of internationalist brigade of victory 03.07. – current location Ljubljana +++

Yesterday the internationalist brigade of victory set off from Vienna to Ljubljana after a gathering infront of the Greek embassy. Today there will be a solidarity gathering in front of the Greek embassy in Ljubljana at 11 am CET.

URGENT INFORMATION ABOUT THE HEALTH SITUATION OF ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS – INTUBATED IN THE ICU

Aristotelis Chantzis, a hunger striker for 140 days until Wednesday 24/06/2026, hospitalized from Monday 22/06/2026, was just intubated due to severe respiratory failure, in the ICU of Evangelismos Hospital.

All political responsibles, especially Nikos Chardalias and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, bear full responsibility for the development of his state of health and for any outcome it has. For 5 months they have known through the public positions of the Community its demands for which Aristotelis Chantzis put his own life on line and was finally justified, but also through the lasting and public appeals to accept them by doctors, international and Greek institutions.
Knowing all of this very well, they drove him one step before death.

We’re calling for a whole-day gathering on Wednesday 1/7, starting at 11.00 AM in the Park of Evangelismos.

Community of Squatted Prosfygika

INTERNATIONALIST BRIGADE OF VICTORY

In two days the internationalist brigade of victory will start travelling from Vienna to Prosfygika.

The summer will be a crucial time for us both regarding hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis health situation as well as the threat of repression already announced by the spokesman of the parliament Marinakis and visible through the undercover police presence at Evangelismos hospital where Aristotelis is currently in the intensive care unit.
We are calling for this brigade to support Prosfygika in this crucial time and to strengthen the resistance and intensify our internationalist relations.

The route will bring us from central Europe all the way to Athens, on the way we will stop in different cities to connect to the local struggles. It is possible that stops are still added to the route as we are still in communication to finalize this, we will of course update on this.
Join the brigade at any of the stops or organize brigades from your localities to come to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in the summer.

Reach out to us via mail or private message if you want to be part of this.

INVITATION TO WEEKLY UPDATE AND PLANNING CALL

📆Wednesday 1.7. 20:00 CET
🔗https://lecture.senfcall.de/sav-loj-48f-nxo

On the 24.06.2026 Prosfygika declared victory and decided to end the hunger strikes of Aristotelis Chantzis (140 days) and Suzon Doppagne (55 days).

The demands of the hunger strike have been met to a large degree urging for the Regional government of Attica to cancel the illegal plan of eviction of Prosfygika.

The struggle did not end, it will continue and it will and needs to grow even bigger. Therefore we see the need to continue with the weekly update and planning calls. Additionally we call for an internationalist brigade of victory, starting in Vienna and traveling through different cities of the Balkans towards Prosfygika. We call on you to join this, more information can be found on our Social Media and Website.

Every Wednesday evening we make an update and planning call, to analyze the political situation regarding Prosfygika, answer questions and speak about the strategical next steps of the internationalist campaign and internationalist action.

HEALTH UPDATE REGARDING ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS – TRANSFER TO THE EVAGGELISMOS ICU

The health of Aristotelis Chantzis is in extremely critical condition. He is presenting multi-organ failure with cardiac damage, hepatic dysfunction, respiratory failure requiring high-flow oxygen administration, rhabdomyolysis, bone marrow suppression, and electrolyte disturbances within the context of prolonged starvation and in combination with severe refeeding syndrome.

At this moment, he is being transferred from the ICU of “G. Gennimatas” to the ICU of “Evaggelismos.”

We call for a solidarity gathering for our comrade Aristos, at 16:30 outside the Evaggelismos hospital on Ypsilantou Street (Evaggelismos Park).

#saveprosfygika #prosfygikahungerstrike

Update on the health situation of Suzon Doppagne

Suzon Doppagne, who has been on hunger strike since May 1st, was admitted to “Elpis” Hospital following the end of her hunger strike on Wednesday, June 24th, after 55 days.

Her hospitalization is a preventive measure aimed at monitoring and addressing the potentially dangerous complications associated with the refeeding process.

Her health condition is currently stable.

THE STRUGGLE HAS WON – THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!

Over the past five months, an extraordinary struggle for life and death has been unfolding for the defence of Prosfygika on Alexandras Av. This was a struggle against eviction, displacement, and the destruction of the largest self-organized initiative for social housing, solidarity, and the common good in Greece and across Europe. The aggressors have been a socially destructive regime and Regional Governor N. Chardalias with their gentrification plans and a policy of repression against movements and people.

At the forefront of this struggle, comrade Aristotelis Chantzis (on hunger strike since February 5, 2026) and comrade Suzon Doppagne (on hunger strike since May 1, 2026) have voluntarily carried a heavy load.

It is a struggle that has been victorious from the very beginning, because the only lost struggle is the one that was never fought. It is a just, selfless, and collective struggle—not only for the more than 400 residents of Prosfygika, but for society as a whole. For all of us. For the right to shelter, to life, to dignity, and for people’s right to organize, to self-organize, and to shape their own lives in dark times.

It is also a struggle that started from the grassroots and has spread everywhere—in Greece and internationally—throughout society, among social movements, among ordinary people, and even within institutional bodies and political parties. This struggle is victorious not only in strictly political sense but also in ways that are deeply social. Through its promotion of openness and inclusiveness it managed to bring together many different people, enabling the formation of a movement that set an example of how to build victorious struggles and forge social fronts of resistance in times of recession, drought, and widespread fragmentation—despite, of course, its mistakes and weaknesses.

Yesterday, the Municipality of Athens issued its second resolution, which serves as the final nail in the coffin of the Chardalias plan, which had already collapsed in every aspect—technical, political, and economical. Moreover, the resolution largely addresses our just and self-evident demands, within the limits of its capabilities:

  1. It called on the Region of Attica to halt the implementation of the decision to gentrify the neighborhood of Prosfygika and, at the same time, on the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to suspend its hunger strike.
  2. It recognized the Community of Squatted Prosfygika as an autonomous entity and a collective social actor, and as an equal partner with a decisive role in any future effort to restore the neighborhood of Prosfygika.
  3. It agreed that all residents of Prosfygika will remain in their homes and, even in the event of restoration work, will be relocated within the neighborhood, thereby also accepting the phased restoration of the buildings that we propose.
  4. It emphasized the Municipality’s responsibilities. The Municipality has clear powers and responsibilities, both regarding the permits required at various stages of building restoration and in the area of social housing. The Municipality has guaranteed that it will neither assist nor grant the necessary approvals for the project, thereby blocking any action by the Regional Authority that deviates from the framework defined above.

As for the abstention vote by Subversive Alliance and People’s Rally factions, we fully respect their position in light of the concerns and disagreements they have raised. After all, we, too, feel the need to express our disagreement with any comparison between the value of human life and a painted wall. Especially when that life has been left by institutional indifference and economic interests to melt away like wax for 140 days, with its fate hanging by a thread.

We also feel the need to state that we maintain our doubts about the implementation of the commitments made by the institutions, as demonstrated by so many cases. A recent such case is that of hunger striker Panos Routsis, the father of Dennis, who was murdered in Tempi. Mr. Routsis is still waiting for the government to fulfill its promise to exhume his son’s body. We expect these commitments to be honored and call on the solidarity movement to remain vigilant.

Today, following the massive movement of solidarity and support and the multilayered recognition of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, the Mitsotakis government and the Region of Attica stand alone against the whole of society. They have nothing left to oppose the Community with, except the weapon of raw violence. We are here to stand together against it, just as we have done throughout all these years of harsh repression carried out by the most reactionary political forces.

Based on the above developments on Wednesday, June 24, we as the Community held discussions with the hunger strikers Aristos and Suzon and collectively decided to suspend the hunger strike while continuing the struggle through other means until our demands are fully met.

The positive outcome of the struggle so far and the satisfaction of the greater part of our demands allow us to bring the hunger strike to a victorious conclusion. This also means avoiding the risk of losing two people who are so valuable to us and to society as a whole. At the same time, it is also to avoid burdening with deaths a movement and a public, which is either unfamiliar with self-sacrificing struggles or believes this struggle has already been won.

Finally, if Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias’s true objective from the outset was indeed the restoration and preservation of the buildings and their historical significance, we remain open to dialogue to find common ground, based on the continued presence of all residents of Prosfygika and the recognition of the existing self-organized community.
The solutions to the problems of our times are found in partnership with society, not in opposition to it. In contrast to the plans of revenge, hostility, and political extermination on the part of the state, the regional government, and the Mitsotakis government, this struggle is a struggle of the defense of life and dignity and to set a different example for our societies and people.

To conclude, we must extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you—most of whom were strangers to us—who stand by our side, from your own standpoint, in this just and beautiful struggle. We take full accountability for any mistakes we have made and are willing to review them together with those interested in such discussion. Finally, we call for vigilance regarding the critical state of Aristotelis Chantzis’s health, regarding the possibility of vindictive actions against the hunger strikers and our Community as a whole, as well as the continuation of government’s and region’s hostile plans against the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

FOR PROSFYGIKA – FOR LIFE – FOR DIGNITY!
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
EITHER WE WILL WIN, OR WE WILL WIN!

INTERNATIONALIST BRIGADE OF VICTORY

We call on every individual, collective, and organisation to join the internationalist brigade of victory coming to Athens, starting on the 2nd of July in Vienna, travelling through different cities towards Prosfygika. To support the Struggle of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.
Because this struggle is our common struggle!

Yesterday, on the 24th of June, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika announced the end of the hunger strike until death for the defense of life and the Community, by the comrades Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne. In answer to the positive voting of the municipality of Athens on a statement containing – with gaps – the demands of the hunger strike urging for the Regional government of Attica to cancel the illegal plan of eviction of Prosfygika.
Furthermore, there will be a dialogue in which the Community is respected as a participant and essential for the discussions concerning the neighborhood of Prosfygika.

The change in the stance of the institutions, from describing Prosfygika as an empty neighborhood and not speaking about the hunger strike, to where we are now and what we consider our win, is the outcome of 140 days of mobilization in Athens, Greece, and Internationally. We want to thank you a lot for this immense and constant support from all over the world!

As of writing this text, Aristotelis Chantzis’ health continued to deteriorate rapidly, in the start of the refeeding process, leading to a precautious transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Also, hunger striker Suzon Doppagne is now starting the refeeding process, which is also closely monitored by doctors as she reached 55 days of Hungerstrike.
The refeeding process is the most critical and also a deadly phase of the hunger striker, as the metabolism has to get used to nutrition again.
Especially the first weeks of this process are crucial for the lives and the health condition of the hunger strikers.

As we see it, even though we achieved our demands in a formal way, this is not a complete victory. The next period of time will be fundamental for the defense of this victory.
We won another battle. The upcoming summer time will be crucial not only for the health of the hunger strikers but also for the ongoing process concerning the eviction plan and in terms of repression. Especially with the recognition of the Community and for the renovations of the buildings, we need support on the ground.
Corresponding with the published call to come to Prosfygika in the summer, we ask for people to come and actively defend the community, strengthen the existing 23 structures, participate in the restoration of the buildings, as well as support with expanding the barrication of buildings and support the organization of social kitchens and nutrition of the neighborhood.

How strong internationalist solidarity can be has been shown in the last months with the support for the Community. Now we want to strengthen these bonds for a long-term perspective to fight our future struggles together!

Therefore, we call for the internationalist brigade of victory coming to Athens. We will upload the pressure on the responsible institutions and the Greek state with internationalist gatherings in Front of Greek embassies and EU-Houses on the way to Athens.

With local events and meetings we want to connect with different movements upon our common enemies and fight.

Please reach out to us when you want to be part of it.

A clear route and corresponding dates will follow soon!
