Open Dialogue with the Region of Attica

The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, announced on Friday, June 12th, that the Municipality of Athens is requesting a dialogue on the situation of the Prosfygika housing complex on Alexandras Avenue

Haris Doukas proposes an open and organized dialogue including the government and the regional department of Attika. The statement also calls on political parties to take a clear position so that the loss of further human rights and human lives can be avoided.

We believe that this development is influenced by the question on the legitimacy of the EU funding that was submitted to the European Commission by 33 members of the European Parliament from the Socialists, the Greens and the Left – which is an outcome from the Community’s delegation in Brussels.

The Community published a statement .

We regard the initiative of Doukas as a positive step, even though it is long overdue. The words have to be followed by actions as soon as possible.

We continue to struggle to ensure that the Prosfygika neighborhood remains a living community: a social project of social housing, solidarity, public benefit and collective memory.

STATEMENT BY THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA OF ALEXANDRAS AV. REGARDING THE LATEST STATEMENT BY ATHENS MAYOR CHARIS DOUKAS

After a harsh and costly struggle, marked by the hunger strikes of Aristotelis Chantzis (129 days) and Suzon Doppagne (44 days), and a massive solidarity movement across Greece and internationally—which, in fact, led 33 Members of the European Parliament (from the Left, Greens, Socialists, and Non-Affiliated) to submit a question to the European Commission, the Mayor of Athens now acknowledges that the consultation with those directly affected, which is required by law, has not taken place.

Contrary to the government’s official claims in Parliament (responses by Papathanasis and Spanakis to the topical questions posed by E. Tsakalotos, A. Kazamias, and Z. Konstantopoulou), on the one hand regarding an allegedly exhausted dialogue and on the other regarding fearmongering, as well as the threats of mass eviction by government spokesperson P. Marinakis in response to C. Avramidis’s question, emphasizing “that the law is above human rights,” it is clear that a closed-door dialogue—which excludes the Community that has lived in, cared for, and defended Prosfygika for nearly 20 years—is simply invalid.

The Mayor of Athens took the initiative to seek “the broadest possible social consensus,” recognizing the Community as the most natural partner in this process. He also calls on Regional Governor N. Chardalias, the government, all political parties, and the relevant institutions to take a positive stance in this dialogue.

We view this initiative positively and as a step in the right direction. Consequently, we accept the invitation and declare that we are here, open to a substantive dialogue, without preconceived decisions, with the Community as the natural dialogue partner and where every discussion will begin with the recognition of the existing reality: that Prosfygika is not an empty space, but a vibrant Community of people, with social structures and a historical presence spanning decades.

The Mayor of Athens, by virtue of his institutional role, has the power to prevent the continuation of the regional governor’s and the government’s plans for the reppression and destruction of the Community, as he is the official responsible for social housing and the licensing of any construction work.

For our part, we expect this initiative not to remain merely on paper; we expect words to be turned into action and the willingness to engage in dialogue to be immediately translated into formal invitations.

Pending further developments, we are suspending the entry of new hunger strikers, as we committed to doing during the press conference we held at on May 25, 2026. Hunger strikers Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne continue the struggle, awaiting—as we all do—a positive response from all parties as soon as possible to find a solution.

We continue to fight so that Prosfygika remain a vibrant Community, a social project of social housing, solidarity, of common benefit, and collective memory.

Pressrelease – 130 DAYS OF HUNGER STRIKE AS AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR HALT TO EVICTIONS

UN RIGHTS MECHANISM REVIEWS ATHENS CASE WHILE THE GREEK STATE ANNOUNCES CONTINUATION OF EVICTION PLANS

Local and International mobilisations increasing ahead of Brussels actions

ATHENS, Greece — June 14, 2026

Aristotelis Chantzis has entered the 130th day of a hunger strike in defence of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in central Athens, as concerns continue to grow over plans to evict resdients and redevelop the historic neighbourhood.

The second hunger striker, Suzon Doppagne, who joined the protest in solidarity on May 1, is approaching 50 days of her hunger strike. More members of the community -some of them with serious health problems -have also announced plans to join the hunger strike.

The protest comes in response to a redevelopment plan approved by the Regional Government of Attica in June 2025 that would lead to the eviction of the approximately 400 residents of the Prosfygika neighborhood. Residents include families with children, refugees, elderly people, oncology patients and their relatives, and people participating in rehabilitation programs. Supporters of the Community say no concrete rehousing guarantees have been presented.

The case has increasingly drawn international attention from human rights organisations, legal experts, academics, and housing advocates. Last week, a delegation of the community went to Brussels, where they had meetings with over 20 members from the European Parliament (MEP). In a press conference on June 4, the lawyer and member of the Committee for the Promotion and Defense of the Community and its collective Memory, Nikos Kolokotronis described that all MEPs committed to supporting the community and their struggle for justice. This includes the submission of questions to the European Parliament, a joint announcement of their support for the Community and the priorization of this struggle, due to the urgency of the Hunger Strike. They will emphasize that the EU-funded contract to evict the community relies on severe irregularities, such as a violation of the partnership principles.

On April 27 2026, Amnesty International called for the suspension of forced eviction plans and raised concerns regarding possible violations of fundamental and constitutionally protected human rights. Amnesty urged authorities to review the demands raised by the hunger strikers and residents in line with international human rights standards.

Additionally an official complaint has also been submitted to the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, who has reportedly taken up the case following concerns regarding potential human rights implications connected to the planned eviction process.

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika calls for participation in a demontration in Syntagma Square, Athens on June 14, 12pm and for national and international actions in solidarity with the struggle. In their statetement the community declares:

“We declare once again that this fight will continue to the end. From the first moment, we knew it was a struggle for life or death, dignity or submission, resistance or destruction. (…) The collective decision of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and our two comrades who have decided to go beyond their limits, to fight until the end, with an understanding of the cost and unwavering faith in our victory.”

On the 3.-5. of June the delegation from the Community of Squatted Prosfygika will go to Brussels.

Why? Because the Community is under a concrete threat of eviction, funded with ESPA/NSRF funds from the EU.

Goal of this delegation is,

  • to make the struggle of the Community known towards members of the European Parliament and in this way increase the pressure on the greek state,
  • to ask for statements of solidarity
  • to show the serious gaps of the contract such as various unanswered legal questions:
  • Unresolved issues regarding the legality of the ownership status of the buildings.
  • Substantial, unauthorized changes to the original agreement and funding structure.
  • Alleged irregularities concerning Regional NSRF funding procedures.
  • Blatant incompatibilities between the approved project and the officially approved restoration study of 2018.
  • The absolute necessity to protect the historical and architectural character of the Prosfygika complex, officially recognized as a protected modern monument due to its Bauhaus architecture and its role in the modern history of Greece.
    Programme
  • On the 03/06 there will be a meeting with Members of the European Parliament, from 4-6pm a demonstration in front of the European Parliament and in the evening a community event.
  • On the 04/06 at 4pm we will have a press conference.

For the time in between and on the 5th there will be time to meet with NGOs and other organizations, politicians, groups and people, who are willing to listen and support the community.

We ask our internationalist network to

  • Reach out to those who might know Members of the European Parliament and invite them for the meeting with us on the 3. of June
  • Contacts to human rights organizations / activists / groups / public figures who are based in Brussels or willing to come to meet there
  • Call for journalists that are based in Brussels or willing to come to join for the press conference
  • For everyone who can: COME TO BRUSSELS!

PRESS CONFERENCE OF THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA FROM ATHENS (GREECE) – THE CRUCIAL PHASE OF THE HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL DEATH

4 June – La Fleur en Papier Doré
Rue des Alexiens 55, Brussels
Time: 16.00

We invite members of the press, independent journalists, and international media to attend a public press conference on 4 June in Brussels concerning the ongoing struggle of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in Athens, Greece.

In the heart of Athens, a living community of people is under attack today. The Prosfygika neighborhood consists of 8 housing blocks with 228 apartments, situated on a central plot of land in Athens, Greece. More than 400 residents currently live in these buildings and are collectively organized as the self-organized “Community of Squatted Prosfygika”. Among them are more than 50 minors, people with severe health issues, refugees, and politically engaged individuals. The community takes care of itself through 22 self-organized social welfare structures that have been running for 16 years and are open to the public. These include healthcare structures, accommodation for cancer patients and their companions, a social pharmacy, childcare facilities, a library, workshops, and solidarity kitchens.

Despite this reality, the Region of Attica approved Decision No. 864/2025, describing the buildings as “vacant” and advancing a redevelopment project funded through European resources. Residents and supporters denounce this decision as false and lacking any legal framework, warning it could lead to the forced eviction and displacement of more than 400 people, and the destruction of one of the largest self-organized communities in Europe.

At the same time, two members of the community, Aristotelis Chantzis (since 5 February) and Suzon Doppagne (since 1 May), are on hunger strike until death. Their health conditions are reported as crucial, especially Aristotelis, who has already exceeded 110 days of hunger strike, placing both lives in extreme danger.

Residents, supported by organisations, have challenged the redevelopment through legal complaints, public interventions, parliamentary questions, and solidarity actions. Also, the amnesty international is calling for cancelling of the plan of Region of Attica (*) Despite broad mobilisation from residents, experts, municipalities, artists, academics, lawyers, and international bodies, the Region of Attica continues to refuse dialogue, consultation, or discussion, declaring the matter resolved.

During the press conference, representatives of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and the Committee for the Promotion and Defense of the Community of Prosfygika and its Collective Memory will speak about the ongoing struggle to protect residents’ lives, the violation of human rights and the rule of law by the Greek government, as well as the hunger strike and procedures followed at European and international level.

No EU-Funds for the Eviction of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika
No EU-Funds to kill the Hunger Strikers Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne

For almost 120 days, Aristotelis Chantzis has carried out a hunger strike until death in defense of the Squatted Community of Prosfygika in Athens. Since May 1st, Suzon Doppagne has joined him on this path for the defense of life. A struggle for a society built on solidarity, dignity, resistance, and the conviction that we will win.

Their decision is grounded in collective determination: the refusal to accept the eviction of a living community, the destruction of collective care, and the displacement of more than 400 residents. For more than 16 years, Prosfygika has built relationships, culture, and a model of self-organization, self-sufficiency, and direct democracy that continues to sustain hundreds of people from the oppressed class and from over 27 nationalities unified in the center of Athens.

And still, the Mitsotakis government has made clear that it is prepared to let the hunger strikers die in order to attack and destroy one of the largest self-organized communities in Europe — through a violent eviction carried out in the name of the planned “Regeneration Project,” financed through several millions from the european ESPA funds.

At a time when every aspect of life is being privatized, commodified, and placed under attack, more and more people are being pushed into poverty, exclusion, and social death. We see it in the collapse of public healthcare, the privatization of education, the eviction of people from their homes, the destruction of labor rights, and the unbearable rise in the cost of rent, food, and energy. We see it in the criminalization of resistance, the repression of communities, the destruction of public and natural spaces, and in governments investing in war, genocide, and militarization while society itselfisforced into precarity.

In this reality, Prosfygika affirms that another way of life is possible: a life rooted not in isolation and the logic of “everyone for themselves,” but in solidarity, collective care, and shared resistance. The attack against the Squatted Community of Prosfygika is therefore far more than an attack on a neighborhood. It is an attack against the possibility of self-organization beyond state control, exploitation, and abandonment; an attack against the right to live with dignity; and an attack against a life built on shared responsibility, humanity, and collective struggle.

After months full of local and internationalist mobilization, interventions at the municipality of Athens and the Attica Region and Invitations with local politicians for a dialogue, we will not wait any longer for any positive response from representative of the Greek state.

We call on every person with conscience, every organized force of the movement, every social organization, to come from the 2nd – 4th of June to Brussels to spread our message all together.

WE ARE HERE, WE WILL NOT TAKE A STEP BACK – UNTIL WE WIN OR WE WIN.

PRESS RELEASE 25/05/2026 FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM MONITORING THE HEALTH OF HUNGER STRIKER ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS, who has been on hunger strike since February 5, 2026

On May 24, hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis was transported by ambulance to Aiginiteio Hospital after experiencing numbness in the head and blurred vision.

From the neurological examination it was revealed absent tendon reflexes in the lower limbs, consistent with malnutrition. A brain CT scan was performed, revealing no acute pathology.

On the doctors’ orders, he was admitted to Elpis Hospital for further medical evaluation.

The pathological examination revealed a viral infection of the upper respiratory system, which is accelerating the deterioration of his condition and increasing the risk.

The blood tests revealed low serum urea levels, hyperuricemia, and symptomatic hypoglycemia, findings consistent with starvation. At the same time, new-onset transaminasemia indicative of liver dysfunction was observed in the context of prolonged starvation.

After the integration of the exams he returned to the neighborhood of Prosfygika.

We repeat that from the first weeks of the hunger strike, he has been experiencing progressively worsening episodes of orthostatic hypotension, dizziness with fatigue and tachycardia upon standing. Those episodes have worsened and are now significantly affecting his ability to function, in addition with sleep disorders that have been established.

At the same time, persistent electrocardiographic abnormalities predisposing to fatal arrhythmias are observed daily.

He already had on 3/04//2026 a fainting episode and he experiences hypoglycemic episodes on a daily basis, while on Wednesday, April 15, medical intervention was required to treat a severe hypoglycemic episode.

The hunger striker is now very exhausted, suffering from swelling in both lower limbs and an inability to stand for long periods, which significantly limits his mobility and ability to move.

He is already on his 110th day of hunger strike and is emaciated, weighing 43.7 Kg and having lost a total of 32.76% % of his initial body weight. Given the duration of the hunger strike, we warn of the risk of imminent irreversible damage to vital organs.

With every passing 24 hours, the hunger striker faces an ever-increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with dangerous, life-threatening complications.

In addition to all of the above, since Wednesday, May 20, he has been suffering from a viral upper respiratory infection, which is accelerating the deterioration of his condition and increasing the risk.

His demands reflect the collective demands of the Community:

  • IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT BY THE REGION OF ATTICA.
  • ALL RESIDENTS OF PROSFYGIKA TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES, IN THE PLACE AND AREA WHERE THEY LIVE AND HAVE ESTABLISHED SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND ORGANICAL TIES.
  • CONCRETE GUARANTEES TO BE GIVEN FOR THE RESTORATION OF PROSFYGIKA BY THE NON-PROFIT COVIL LAW COMPANY KNOWN AS “RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS OF PROSFYGIKA ALEXANDRAS AV.” USING ITS OWN FUNDING! – NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE “RESTORATION” OF PROSFYGIKA!

The hunger has declared that he does not intend to end his hunger strike despite the health risks, until his demands are met.

After 110 days of a hunger strike and given the progressively worsening condition of his health, everyone involved is to be held accountable for the imminent complications or even a fatal outcome, especially the Regional Administration of Attica. The cover-up of the hunger strike by the majority of the media, as well as the criminal silence of the government, parliamentary political forces, and the relevant authorities, are all complicit in driving the hunger striker to his death.

On May 14, Mitsotakis government clearly stated its decision regarding the death of the hunger strikers from the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. Specifically, government spokesperson P.Marinakis, in response to a question from journalist Christos Avramidis about whether the government intends, based on Amnesty International’s appeal* to comply with international human rights standards and urgently review the demands of hunger strikers Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne and the Community, he explicitly states the decision to evict the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and condems to death the the two hunger strikers.

* The statment of Amnesty International on 27/04/2026 which is calling out the Region of Attica for violating fundamental and constitutionally protected human rights through plans concerning the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, as expressed in Decision No. 864/16-6-2025 regarding the conclusion of a programmatic agreement.

Pressrelease according the 100 Day of Hungersrike and 400 Threatened by Eviction

ATHENS, Greece — May 16, 2026

A massive demonstration took place in the city centre on May 16, to fight the eviction of 400 people from the self-managed squatted community of Prosfygika in Ambelokipi on 101st day of unlimited hungerstrike of Aristoteles Chantzis.

“Demonstration for Victory and Dignity – Hunger Strike Until Death, For The Defense of Life”

On February 5, Aristotelis Chantzis, a resident and member of the Prosfygika Community, began a hunger strike which, he has stated, will continue if necessary to the point of death. May 15 marked the 100 day of his hunger strike. According to medical reports issued by his treating doctors, his health has severely deteriorated and his life is now at serious risk. On May 1st, a second resident and member of the Prosfygika community, Suzon Doppagne, also entered a hunger strike until death, standing side by side and in solidarity with Aristotelis Chantzis. Other community members have already declared their intention to participate in the hunger strike until death, for the defense of life, if the eviction plans are not cancelled.

As the situation reaches a critical phase, masses of people from all social classes and ages in Athens took the streets on May 16 in support of Chantzis and in defense of the Community. 3.000 people gathered at 12:00 on syntagma square in Athens and walked through the city centre, to demonstrate loudly and visible the power, vitality and support of the struggle. This marks a temporary climax after months of protests, which will still go on. Support has spread across Greece and internationally, with actions in over 29 cities in countries including Mexico, Columbia, Turkey, the US, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Ireland. Under the hashtag #saveprosfygika, people are announcing weekly their intent to join solidarity hunger strikes in support of Chantzis’ demands in defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

Summary/Top Lines

The hunger strike and related protests come in response to a plan by the regional government of Attica to evacuate and renovate the buildings of the neighborhood. The project implies the imminent eviction of the approximately four hundred residents of the Community who have lived there for decades with their families. The three main demands of the hungerstrike are:

  • The immediate cancellation of the programmatic contract be ensured by the Regional Government of Attica, along with a formal declaration stating that it will not proceed with the implementation of the current redevelopment and exploitation plan.
  • All residents of Prosfygika to remain in their homes, in the place and area where they live and have established social, cultural and organical ties.
  • Concrete guarantees to be given for the restoration of Prosfygika by the Non-Profit Civil Law Company “Katoikoi kai Filoi Prosfygikon L. Alexandras Non-Profit Civil Law Company” with its own self-financing.

In June 2025, the Regional Government of Attica, to which the city of Athens belongs, approved a programmatic contract for the “renovation” and evacuation of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. The planned renovation is to be funded by the European Commission at an estimated total cost of 15 million euros. Concrete proposals for the housing of hundreds of members of the Community, including children, patients and relatives from the adjacent oncology hospital and other highly vulnerable groups, have not followed.

Despite being branded as a social housing project, the contract has been widely criticized over this lack of proposal, raising increasing doubts over the wider gentrification process of the wider neighbourhood, and Greece’s capital as a whole.

Venetia, a resident from the neighborhood says that the community has no other chance than taking these steps to defend the lives of the 400 people living there. The demonstration shows that the society stands behind the community and the demands of the hungerstrike.

Chantzis says that he is aware of the serious health risks of the hunger strike, including the possibility of sudden cardiac arrest from the beginning. He also acknowledges that even if the strike succeeds, prolonged starvation can cause permanent damage to his body, especially to his nervous system, including during recovery.

Doppagne states that she proceeds to this hunger strike until death based on the collective decision as a Community to carry this struggle through to the end. With respect for life, and in defense of the Community, of its structures, its people, its relationships, of justice, and of our broader social proposal.

Quotes

“Of course, I am aware that I may experience health complications from the first days and throughout the strike, not so much from starvation but from cardiac arrest. I also know that even if the outcome is successful, chronic starvation can cause irreparable damage, mainly to my nervous system, even during the recovery period.” (Aristotelis Chantzis)

“I proceed to this hunger strike until death based on our collective decision as a Community to carry this struggle through to the end. With respect for life, and in defense of the Community, of its structures, its people, its relationships, of justice, and of our broader social proposal.” (Suzon Doppagne)

“We have no other Chance than taking these steps to defend the lives of the 400 people living here. The demonstration shows that society stands behind us and the demands of the hungerstrike” (Venetia, resident)

WHAT IS HAPPENING AT PROSFYGIKA ON ALEXANDRAS AVENUE, AND WHY IS THERE A HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL DEATH?

Since February 5th, Aristotelis Chantzis, a resident and member of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, is on a hunger strike until death. On May 1st, the resident and member, Suzon Doppagne, has joined the defence of life, the relationships, culture, and model of self-organization, self-sufficiency, and direct democracy that the community has established over the past 16 years.

The eight historic building blocks that constitute the neighborhood of Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, right in the heart of the metropolis between the General Police Directorate and the Athens Court of Appeals, were built in 1933–1935 to house refugees from Minor Asia. For the past 16 years, the neighbourhood has been shaped by the vibrant community of 400 people, and their different cultural religious, linguistic, political, and ideological histories. The members and residents organize in open assemblies, based on the premise of horizontality and solidarity, to cover their needs collectively, and live together respectfully.

For the common good and self-sufficiency, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika has established 22 autonomous, open social structures for the residents of the neighborhood,
and the wider Ambelokipi area. With the daycare center, the accommodation facility for patients and their companions at the nearby cancer hospital, the health center and communal pharmacy, the structure for collective self-education, food production and logistics, the clothing or technical structure, and divers cultural activities, the community is the largest self-organisation initiative in Greece. At the same time, it has established a web of horizontal relationships to counter the dominant culture of competition, oppression, and
individualization, fostering a collective culture and politics of life and struggle.

Since June 2025, the Greek state is seeking once again to destroy the community, displacing its 400 residents and hand over the historic neighborhood to state, capital, and business interests. A programmatic agreement, signed by the Region of Attice, the Ministry of Culture, and the Regional Authority of Attica, is bringing forward a gentrification plan that will lead to a comprehensive transformation of Prosfygika, and the character of the Ambelokipi area in general.

The residents are currently fighting collectively on multiple levels against the violent implementation of the plan, to ensure the web of relationships of the community, and the relative autonomy and self-sufficieny it has built from buttom-up over the years. At the
forefront of this struggle is Aristotelis Chantzis’ and Suzon Doppagnes’ hunger strike until death, putting their lifes for the community and its political proposal at risk.

ACTION UNTIL VICTORY – 1st phase – 9th – 16th of May

The situation is critical:
The issued concrete eviction and gentrification plans from the regional government with the aim to extinguish the self-organized community that is struggling in this liberated ground since 16 years, are still not cancelled!

The answer of the community remains clear: no inch of land for the criminal state and capital, we will struggle until victory!
As a counterattack, two community members have entered a hunger strike until death — Aristotelis Chantzis since 5th of February (now 93 days) and Suzon Doppagne since 1st of May (now 8 days).

The three central demands are:
– Immediate cancellation of the contract by the Region of Attica
– All residents of Prosfygika to remain in their homes, in the place and area where they live and have established social, cultural, and organical ties
– Concrete guarantees to be given for the restoration of Prosfygika by the non-profit civil law company „Residents and friends of Prosfygika L. Alexandras non profit civil law company“ with its own self-financing – no public funds for the „redevelopment“ of Prosfygika

On May 16, the 101st day of the hungerstrike of Aristotelis Chantzis, we call for a central demonstration of victory and resilience in Athens.

Leading to this day, we need to increase the pressure and make every effort to make Prosfygika a topic in the European level, as the Greek Authorities still deny to answer the demands of the community and the hunger strikers.

We urge all of you to take action and support the struggle of Prosfygika on an international level! Just as the struggle for community is a unifying struggle across diverse societies, victory will not only be the communities, but connected to all our struggles, both local and international.

Therefore we need everybody to organize and participate in:
– interventions at the Europe Day 2026, taking place 9th of May in different countries (https://europeday.eu/agenda/)
– Gatherings in front of Greek missions in every possible locality (embassies and consulates)
– Solidarity hungerstrikes
– Digital and postcard spamming action
– To hand over memorandums to ambassadors
– Collecting signatures for the support of the demands
– Inviting public figures, journalists, artists in their local context to the gatherings

CALL for Researchers and Academics to Support the Defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika

For 16 years, Prosfygika – the largest squat in Greece and most probably in Europe, spanning eight apartment blocks with more than 14 hectares – has brought together around 27 nationalities in a unique model of horizontal self-administration, self-sufficiency and communality. Through structures1 like a communal bakery, a children’s structure, a women’s structure, a health structure and open assemblies, the residents of Prosfygika have built a community based on solidarity, mutual aid and collective care.

Today the community stands in direkt opposition to the Greek state’s “redevelopment” plan, which seeks to displace its inhabitants and repurpose the prime urban space in central Athens as part of their broader gentrification effort in collaboration with the Region of Attica, DYPA (Public Employment Service).

To protect their rights, their community and their living space, as well as the historical and collective memory of the buildings (which are listed as a monument of modern history), the community has proposed its own phased renovation plan. This would be carried out by the Community, its legal entity (Non-Profit Civil Law Company), the Committee for the promotion and defense of Prosfygika and its collective memory, and an already collaborating group of architects, civil engineers, archaeologists and researchers. This would allow all residents to remain on site and the historic building to be safely preserved and renovated.

This is the 5th, and major political offence against of the existence of the community in the last decades by the state. This time it is the most serious one due to the specific details of the plan and the confirmed funding. In the plans for the “redevelopment” of the area the people living there are mentioned solely as “mobile items”, and in state-media that supports the right-wing government of New Democracy, it becomes clear that they target the Community of Squatted Profygika as their Opposition.

To protect his community and the life oft its people, the inhabitant and member of the Community, Aristotelis Chantzis, decided on February 5 to start a hungerstrike until death for the defense of life. Today he is on hungerstrike for over 90 days. Since May 1, Suzon Doppagne stands alongside with him in the hunger strike until death. We now need the urgent support of large parts of the international society, to help us protecting the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, the life of the people living there and the vision of a united and self-determined society that Prosfygika is standing for.

Why Prosfygika Matters

Prosfygika is more than a local struggle: It embodies the power of marginalized communities to create resilient, self-sufficient spaces against all kinds of discrimination and oppression – even in face of the forces of gentrification and state repression. We believe that Prosfygika demonstrates the transformative potential of collective action and self-organisation, to find solutions to individual and societal problems in a moment of global polycrisis.

Through the building of permanent structures that respond to the existential needs of the people, proposals for all of society are being created. Communal life and collective ownership bring people across nationalities, religions, class and gender together, establishing ways to communicate, to support each other in challenging life and personal growth.

It’s exemplary of the necessity to protect self-determined ways of living against neoliberal urban policies – not just in Athens, but wherever people face displacement.

How You Can Support

As academics, your voice and resources can amplify Prosfygika’s fight for survival. We invite you to:

  • Incorporate Prosfygika into your teaching—discuss its model of self-organization and resistance in lectures, seminars, or workshops.
  • Consider research or fieldwork in Prosfygika, documenting its history, structures, or the broader context of urban resistance in Athens. You are warmly invited to visit Prosfygika in person to experience the community and its challenges firsthand.
  • Express solidarity by mentioning Prosfygika in newsletters, mailing lists, or public statements, and by raising the issue in university committees and with colleagues, helping to build broader awareness and support for the community’s perspective. As a first step, you can sign the signatures list to support the demands of the hungerstrike.
  • Please sign also the additional petition for academics
  • Participate in the circular hungerstrike with your own statements, write letters to the EU-Commission or Greek embassies, or come to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika!

With respect to the specific fields of academia, we have some examples in mind, listed on the next page, that may be of interest to you.

The time to act is now – before another world is erased by profit and repression.

In solidarity,

Architecture / urban planning: The buildings of the neighbourhood were build in the Bauhaus style in 1923, as a fast solution for the 3 million refugees from minor asia beeing displaced after the Greco-Ottoman war. At the time, these buildings were designed to facilitate a communal way of living, which is preserved 100 years on by the contemporary community. For the real rescue of Prosfygika both as buildings and as a community, a self-managed plan to restore the neighbourhood is beeing implemented which will, along with preserving the historical memory that the authorities have so blatantly distorted and distortively vilified over the years, open more communal spaces for the Athenian society as a whole such as an interactive museum about the Greek civil war, an art-, and culture space and guest houses for the nearby Cancer Hospital.

Social work / psychology: The Community aims to give a holistic answer to the issues of each individual. Personal problems and problematic behaviours will be addressed collectively and solutions will be found. At the same time, the inhabitants are able to develop skills, practically and socially. The legal structure, health structure and children’s structure are actively involved in struggles for the acceptance of refugee children in schools and access to health insurance for refugees. As such, the community is an interesting and unique example of self-organised and community led initiatives for psychological and social support.

Geography: Geographic academics should engage with Prosfygika because it offers a rare empirical site where questions of urban commons, autonomous spatial production, migration, territoriality, and resistance to state-led redevelopment intersect. It allows researchers to study how alternative forms of governance, care, and political belonging are materially produced in everyday urban space. As a living archive of displacement, conflict, and self-organization, Prosfygika also provides a unique lens for examining the relationship between memory, infrastructure, and insurgent urban futures.

Political sciences: Prosfygika offers a rare site to study grassroots governance, autonomous political organization, and forms of citizenship enacted beyond or against the state. It provides insight into how power, sovereignty, and political legitimacy are negotiated, particularly in contexts of displacement, repression, and resistance. As such, Prosfygika challenges conventional understandings of governance and opens up alternative perspectives on democracy, autonomy, and political community.

Sociology: The Community provides a rich empirical setting to study collective life, solidarity, social reproduction, and community formation under conditions of precarity and conflict. It offers insight into how social relations, mutual aid, and collective identities are produced and maintained through everyday practices. As a space where marginalization and resistance intersect, Prosfygika also speaks to broader sociological debates on inequality, social movements, and alternative forms of living together.

Urban Studies / Urban planning: Urban scholars and planners should engage with Prosfygika because it offers a rare example of self-managed urbanism that challenges dominant models of state-led planning and market-driven redevelopment. It provides insight into housing struggles, informal governance, and alternative ways of organizing urban space. As a site of resistance to displacement and urban restructuring, Prosfygika opens critical perspectives on planning, justice, and the right to the city.

Socio-legal: Prosfygika provides a site for examining how legality, property, rights, and political authority are contested and negotiated in practice. It offers insight into the tensions between formal law and lived claims to space, shelter, and collective autonomy. As a space where law is both challenged and reworked from below, Prosfygika contributes to broader debates on informal rights, state power, and legal pluralism

Gender studies: The Community, especially the women’s structure, which emerged in response to the specific needs and interests of women in the community, offers important insight into how care, social reproduction, solidarity, and political struggle are shaped by gendered relations and practices. It provides a lens for examining how everyday forms of feminist resistance and community-making often rely on labor that is overlooked or unevenly distributed. As a site of collective life under precarity, Prosfygika also contributes to debates on feminist politics, intersectionality, and alternative forms of living together.

Communication studies: “Prosfygika brings struggles over meaning-making into sharp focus. State and media narratives frame “redevelopment” as progress while erasing residents as political subjects, foreclosing alternative ways of life rooted in collective care and self-organization, and manufacturing consent for gentrification and repression. At the same time, Prosfygika highlights an often overlooked dimension of discourse studies: resistance. Through societal outreach, digital communication, solidarity networks, prefiguration and embodied actions like hunger strikes, the community actively produces counter-discourses and challenges dominant representations. It shows how marginalized groups not only contest imposed meanings but also create and sustain alternative communicative worlds.

Economics: Economic scholars should engage with Prosfygika because it offers a valuable site for studying non-market exchange, collective provisioning, and alternative economic practices beyond capitalist logics. It provides insight into how solidarity economies, shared resources, and informal systems of support can sustain everyday life. As a space where economic survival is tied to collective organization, Prosfygika contributes to broader debates on alternative economies, precarity, and economic justice.

HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL UNTIL DEATH FOR THE DEFENCE OF LIFE

Letter to society, my family, my friends

My name is Suzon Doppagne. I am a resident and member of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, and today, May 1st, I begin a hunger strike until death, in defense of life.

I have decided to stand alongside my comrade Aristotelis Chantzis, who today completes 86 days on hunger strike.

I chose this day of struggle in honor of the martyrs of Chicago in 1886 and the 200 fighters of Kaisariani.

The Greek state and all its institutions have not responded to our demands. They have chosen silence and they let Aristotelis Chatzis to walk the path toward death. From now, they will also bear responsibility for my own death. Today, after 86 days of hunger strike, no one can claim they did not know.

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika is a living example that another way of life is possible — in rupture with the dominant capitalist and patriarchal system. In a time of global crisis and a world war, the only way for our societies to survive and create a different paradigm is through building the world of the Community, of self-organization and solidarity. This is why Prosfygika is under attack.

Throughout all these years, the Community has given answers both to people’s social needs and to the repression it has faced. In this way, our collective strength and our bonds have been built.

I share our words as women’s structure of Prosfygika, with the responsibility and the commitment that I have as a member of it:

“This comradeship that is being built, shapes a whole system of values and attitudes, expressed in everything, from how you speak with your neighbor to how you stand in the street, refusing to leave anyone behind. In essence, these bonds are our collective strength — the tool of our self-defense.”

I proceed to this hunger strike until death based on our collective decision as a Community to carry this struggle through to the end. With respect for life, and in defense of the Community, of its structures, its people, its relationships, of justice, and of our broader social proposal.

My intake includes:

Water, tea, 10–25 grams of sugar daily, 1.5 teaspoons of salt daily, vitamins B1, B6, B12, magnesium, and potassium.

The demands of this hunger strike are:

  • IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT BY THE REGION OF ATTICA
  • ALL RESIDENTS OF PROSFYGIKA TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES, IN THE PLACE AND AREA WHERE THEY LIVE AND HAVE FORMED SOCIAL, CULTURAL AND ORGANIC TIES
  • CONCRETE GUARANTEES FOR THE RESTORATION OF PROSFYGIKA BY THE NON-PROFIT CIVIL LAW COMPANY “RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS OF PROSFYGIKA ALEXANDRAS AVENUE N.P.C.C.” WITH ITS OWN FUNDING! – NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE “REDEVELOPMENT” OF PROSFYGIKA!

Member and resident of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, Alexandras Avenue

1st of May: The history of this day demands that we resist until the end – and win!

The 1st of May has always been a day to defy the ruling system that wages a war on the people. It has always been a day to fight against class injustice, and murderous conditions. History shows that throughout the struggle of the oppressed, lives have always been sacrificed to defend life itself. Though we should not be so naive as to believe the false promise that if we do not dedicate our lives to struggle, to an alternate way of life, we can somehow escape danger of death. Conformity and submission can also make us the next victim: deadly injuries at work, being shot by the cops with your “Hands Up”, or displaced and murdered in the mill of imperial forces. This false promise of safety is an attempt to oppress us, and only reinforces gender, race, religion and age divisions within the oppressed class.

If we believe in social justice, in communities and their strength to take back power from the oppressors who seek to exploit us for the benefit of the few, then we must continue the struggle of those who were martyred fighting the destruction caused by state, capital and patriarchy. We owe them an answer.

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika proposes to build collectivity and social justice in its purest form. Our struggle becomes to strive for everyone’s freedom and equality, any place and any time. This makes sure we will never take a step back from our belief and trust in humanity.

The hungerstrike until death for the defense of life is a means for the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to demonstrate collective commitment to a fight until the very end. A hungerstrike to the death, representing a multitude of lives and possible deaths, as long as those “in power” refuse to take responsibility.

Therefore, on this historic day, the Community will announce a second member to go on a hungerstrike until death for the defense of life.

We call on everyone to take the struggle of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika onto the streets today in any way possible. Sparks of resistance have fed the flame of Prosfygika, and now we give the fire of our battle to ignite every inch of ground, every land to be liberated.

From the martyrs of Chicago, peasants fighting oppressors in Ukraine, Internationalists defending revolution from 1936 until now, to the Guerillas in the Jungles of Mexico and Myanmar, our siblings in Sudan, Palestine and Rojava, within the souls of the 200 of Kaisariani: remember that what we are fighting for is always a fight for life or death.

The histories of struggle for liberation and justice are woven into the fabric of the flags of resistance we carry in the streets today.

THE OPPRESSED OF THE WORLD WILL ONLY WIN UNITED

HANDS OFF PROSFYGIKA – VICTORY TO THE HUNGERSTRIKE

EITHER WE WILL WIN OR WE WILL WIN

Our Societies Can! What does the Community of Squatted Prosfygika defend? Perspectives for the internationalist struggle | April 26, 7pm CET – Online Event-Discussion |

“In a local and international environment where states, institutions, and people are transforming to cope with a dystopian landscape of crises and globalized conflict, can our societies truly succeed? And if so, how? With which social imaginaries and which social examples?” (Sykapro, 2026).

Right now, as Prosfygika faces another existential threat from the state, the Community resists by any means necessary. Our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis has been on hunger strike – until death – for 75 days now, for the defense of life. A second comrade will begin a hunger strike on May 1st.

There is an urgent need to unify our forces and act now for the defense of the community, locally and globally!

To open the issue to broader society, including perspectives from representatives of the Greek movement, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika will hold an event in Athens on Tuesday, April 21st.

In the invitation is stated:

“The struggle currently being waged by the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, including the hunger strike since 5/2/26 by Aristotelis Chantzis, does not concern only the survival of the community itself and its people. It raises crucial questions about our contemporary world.”

As internationalists who align with the vision the Community of Squatted Prosfygika creates, and who were already prepared to organize its defense in the past weeks, months, and years, we need to escalate our resistance towards the next level.

But why do we need to defend the Community of Squatted Prosfygika?

What does the Community mean for our social struggle locally, and what perspectives can we gain from it?

How can we foster strong movements that form a counter-force to the dominant culture of oppression?

On the event on April 26th, we, as the Internationalist Committee to Save Prosfygika, invite you to discuss these questions and to help define the next steps for how we move forward for the defense of the Community.

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika will present the current situation of the planned attack and the progress of its social self-defense.

The Internationalist Committee will be briefly presented, and we will hear from different organizations around the world about the mutual bonds and visions which already exist.

The link for participation is: https://lecture.senfcall.de/sav-loj-48f-nxo

We encourage all organizations to organize public streaming in their localities.
For the first part of the event, press is invited.

We invite you, whether organizations and individuals, to join our event, mobilize in your localities, and participate in the discussion on how to connect the struggle, strengthen our mutual bonds, and defend Prosfygika.

The world only continues to exist if we share it!
Either we will win or we will win!

10, 1000, 10000 squats, organizations and people of the world organized for the defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

Solidarity is our weapon !

For the mobilization of the 5th of April we called our internationalist comrades to participate in solidarity hungerstrikes, organize actions and mobilize for the 5th of April, which supposedly should be both and internationally and panhellenic day of action for the defense of the community oft squatted Prosfygika.

The 5th of April 2026 marked the day where our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis is since 60 days in a hunger strike until death for the defense of life. With this, the necessity becomes bigger to escalate and increase the pressure on the Greek state and the region of Attica and the EU-Commission but it is also a call for us to transform ourselves towards a serious opening to the internationalist and locals spheres, to include everyone who wants to be included and to find the organisation tools and the strength, to put what we wish for into practice.

On that day, the 5th oft April over 2000 people, families, revolutionaries, elderly, teenagers and various internationalist organizations from Turkey, Kurdistan, Sudan and Europe took the streets of Athens center for the defense of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

On the internationalist sphere we received solidarity actions in over 30 localities from 4 different continents, some of them were old friends we worked a lot together or had here and there intensivied discussions with each other. Many of the responses though were new connections that found us in the time that is the most challenging for all of us.

In Ankara, revolutionary youth organizations gathered in front of the Greek embassy.
Saturday night our comrades in Berlin took with bengalo and fireworks the streets, while comrades from Leipzig organized a solidarity event. The Kurdish social center in Düren, comrades from Cologne, Freiburg, Copenhagen, Marseilles, Liege, Brussels, Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, Ljubljana and from the squatted community spazio popolare in Torino sent their declarations of solidarity. In Vienna and Belarus the Greek embassy got attacked with colourbombs.

In the weeks emerging into the the 60-days hungerstrike, comrades from Rome, Scotland, Serbia, Augsburg, the US and Berlin participated in symbolic hunger strikes. Multiple statements of solidarity reached the community from the US, the polish-belarussian border and Rojava and many more places.

We want to share also parts of the statement Subcommandante Marcos from the Zapatistas put in a speech from (date) in which he is referring to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

“Comrades, don ´t worry about your size, your numbers, your mediatic impact, but about your convictions (…). Because there are a lot of ones who are just passing by and only the ones that have very clear the why (meaning there history), the what for (meaning their objective and the how (meaning their organizational way) are the are the ones that (…) don’t give up (…) and abandon their ideals (…). And the struggle will continue, and in Palestine they will continue resisting, and in the rebel Greece in the community of Prosfygika defending their struggle for life; and they will do the same in Israel, and in Kurdistan (…) and they will keep struggling in the Europe that don ´t have black outs, and in the forgotten Africa, and in the Oceania from down and to the left, and in the Asian continent with all its differences, and the Mapuche people will also do, and all the Native Peoples in the world, and with them we will shout MARICHIWEYU (Mapuche word that means TEN TIMES WE WILL WIN), because ten, hundred, thousand times we will win, because we will rebel, we will resist, we will not give up, we will organise, and the life would be our horizon, our step and our warm destiny.”

And everyone would call themselves however they want to, and would have their own word, their own ways, their calendars, their geography, and would celebrate their differences dancing and singing on top of the ashes of a system that brought nothing but death and destruction, because the biggest Gods, the ones from first, the ones that created the worlds, they planted the hearts of men and women, and the ones that are not this not that, one seed that must be worked upon to give fruit and that is called freedom.”

-Capitan Insurgente Marcos (San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, 04/04/2026

Those statements, letters, actions and events from the internationalist commune proved the existence of the broad and determined network of solidarity committed to defending the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. It shows that this network is based on a common struggle, a common struggle in which an attack on one part will be an attack to all of us.

It stands for a commitment for a liberated life and society, for an alliance among opressed people internationally and comradeship, as a trusting bond that organizes our internationalist solidarity no matter how and from where we are fighting ✊✊✊

Press Release: Athens hunger strike enters third month over planned eviction of 400 residents

International solidarity actions took place in defense of the self-managed Prosfygika neighborhood.

Romanos Lioutas

ATHENS, Greece — April 5, 2026

An unlimited hunger strike in Athens has ended its second month as protesters oppose plans to evict around 400 people from the self-managed Squatted Community of Prosfygika in the city center.

Hunger Strike Until Death, For The Defense of Life”

On February 5, Aristotelis Chantzis, a resident and member of the Prosfygika Community, began a hunger strike which, he has stated, will continue if necessary to the point of death. April 5th marks the 60th day of his strike. As the situation reaches a critical phase, which culminated on Friday by his fainting outside of the Ampelokipi police station, masses of people from all social classes and ages in Athens took the streets in a planned demonstration this afternoon in support of Chantzis and in defense of the Community. Followed by months of protests different actions emerged panhellenically and internationally in over 29 cities in Mexico, Columbia, Rojava, Turkey, the US, Italy, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Serbia, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Ireland.

In June 2025, the Regional Government of Attica, which the city of Athens belongs, approved a programmatic contract for the “renovation” and evacuation of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

Key Demands

Chantzis has put forward three key demands in his hunger strike:

• Immediate cancellation of the contract by the region of Attica

• The right of all residents of Prosfygika to remain in their homes

• The right to carry out restoration of the Community in a self-organized way

The Community states that it has maintained the buildings for years and announced a self- organized restoration plan last summer to be financed by its own resources rather than public funds.

Deteriorating Health Conditions

Aristotelis Chantzis is being monitored daily by a Team of Solidarian Doctors and the Health Structure of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. In a collective statement published on 29.03.2026, they report that his condition is now critical after nearly 60 days without food. He is experiencing severe weakness, dizziness when standing, and heart-related issues, with medical tests showing abnormalities that could lead to dangerous or even fatal heart rhythm problems. Each day that his hunger strike continues, the risks to his heart and overall health increase, with potentially life-threatening implications.

On April 3 and on his 58th day of hunger strike, Aristotelis fainted outside of the Ampelokipi police station, where he needed to go for his monthly signature, a penalty he got for attending a demonstration in solidarity with Palestine. His senses returned and he was taken by ambulance to Gennimatas Hospital, before returning to the Community.

Quotes

Of course, I am aware that I may experience health complications from the first days and throughout the strike, not so much from starvation but from cardiac arrest. I also know that even if the outcome is successful, chronic starvation can cause irreparable damage, mainly to my nervous system, even during the recovery period.”
-Aristotelis Chantzis, on Hunger Strike since 5 February

On the verge of its sixtieth day, his health has reached a critical phase. He has been experiencing progressively worsening episodes of orthostatic hypotension, weakness with fatigue and tachycardia upon standing, while daily electrocardiograms reveal persistent abnormalities that predispose to potentially fatal arrhythmia’s. Every day the hunger striker faces an ever-increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risk with potentially life-threatening complications.”

-Aristotelis Chantzis

PRESS RELEASE 5/4/2026 FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM MONITORING HUNGER STRIKER ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS, who has been on hunger strike since February 5, 2026

Hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis, who is on his 60th day of a hunger strike, on Friday, April 3, 2026, suffered a fainting spell a few minutes after 3:00 p.m. and was transported by ambulance to the “Georgios Gennimatas” Hospital.

Examinations conducted in the emergency department of the “Georgios Gennimatas” Hospital revealed low serum urea levels, hyperuricemia, and symptomatic hypoglycemia—findings consistent with starvation.

At the same time, he was administered intravenous treatment with crystalloid fluids (normal saline enriched with potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and MVI). Additionally, he presented with paresthesia (numbness) in the left lower extremity without other focal neurological signs, and further outpatient evaluation was recommended.Additionally, diminished tendon reflexes were noted in the context of malnutrition and muscle atrophy.

Upon completion of the tests, hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis returned to the Prosfigika neighborhood.

We repeat that, since the first few weeks, he has been experiencing progressively worsening episodes of orthostatic hypotension, dizziness with fatigue and tachycardia upon standing, while daily electrocardiograms reveal persistent abnormalities that predispose him to potentially fatal arrhythmias.

He is already on his 60th day of the hunger strike and weighs 49.3 kilograms, having lost a total of 24.1% of his initial body weight.

Every day, the hunger striker faces an ever-increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with potentially, life-threatening complications.

His demands reflect the collective demands of the community.

– NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE “REHABILITATION” OF PROSFYGIKA!

The hunger Striker Chantzis declares that he does not intend to end his hunger strike despite the health risks, until his demands are met.

After 60 days of hunger strike and given the progressively worsening deterioration of the hunger striker’s health, everyone involved is to be held accountable for the imminent complications or even a fatal outcome, especially the Regional Administration of Attica.

CALL FOR ACTIONS AND MOBILIZATION FOR THE INTERNATIONALIST DEFENSE OF THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA – Sunday 5th OF APRIL

In June 2025 the Regional Government of Attica (which Athens belongs to) approved a programmatic contract for the “renovation” and the evacuation of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, where more than 400 people live. 53 days ago, on February 5th, our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis started a hunger strike until death for the defense of the Community, for the defense of life. Soon in the next weeks, a second comrade will follow and start a hunger strike. Several weeks of actions in Athens and internationally have passed. The opening of the Community to the broader society, in Greece and internationally, is to build toward its social self-defense. This opening includes a full events program, a weekly open assembly, guest houses for cancer patients of the nearby Agios Savas hospital, and construction works to renovate houses, create more hospital guest housing, and the construction of the civil war museum. Hundreds of internationalists, solidarians and locals answered the call to come to the community and support the work for its defense.

On March 14th, thousands of people took in Athens the street for the defense of Prosfygika. Solidarity actions also took place in Poland, Serbia, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Colombia.

Although large parts of the movement and the society have been mobilized, the Greek state and the regional government of Attica remain silent and haven’t canceled their ongoing plan. This puts the life of our comrade Aristotelis Chantzis in danger, together with the lives of so many members of the Community who will face extreme life-threatening conditions without the support of the Community and its 22 self-organized social structures.

In Athens we are mobilizing for a central demonstration on the 5th of April. Internationally, we call all people who are for the defense of life to initiate or participate in solidarity actions to promote the panhellenic and international actions on the this same day, in solidarity with the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

Video: Collective Bakery of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika BERKIN ELVAN

The neighborhood of the Squatted Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, we started to inhabit autonomous squats from different political and cultural backgrounds as early as the 2000s, shortly after the state forcibly expelled terrorists by expropriating and demolishing 177 out of 228 apartment owners in the Prosfygika residences. In 2010, the residents of the squatted Prosfygika decided to come together as a collective. This was a time following the 2008 uprising, when numerous projects were being created, squats were succeeding each other as centers of struggle, and collectivization seemed like a natural step.

Mafias were subleasing the houses, trafficking and producing narcotics, defiling the neighborhood, and the police were in and out daily to take their share of the profits. This initial condition triggered our reaction, along with the impending repression we knew the state would unleash to gain control of the houses, as it is prime real estate in the city center. We realized that in order to survive, we needed to unite and collectivize. We envisioned a community where people live together, houses are communal and belong to no one, decisions are made collectively, members support each other, and we fight together on a common path, struggling for our lives.

We imagined an autonomous community where we can sustain ourselves by producing food and maintaining the houses and neighborhood collectively. Our children would self-educate within the community, without needing schools like the ones outside with all their problems. A community where there is no violence among us, and our issues are resolved on different terms, terms based on inclusion, horizontality, and acceptance. We imagined many things and we decided to turn our fantasies into reality.

But how do you turn imagination into reality? How does the fantastic become realistic? The answers are not easy because it requires a counterproposal to the existing system. However, self-organization naturally finds its way, and so the answers constantly revolved around the words “structures” and “infrastructures.”

Our initial thought was about bread. Food that represents humanity and all its differences. Every corner of the world has its unique culture and history, just like bread. We could tell our own story by making our own bread, initially covering the community’s needs and eventually generating income. So, a bakery structure was the first to be established within the squatted Prosfygika neighborhood, shortly after the formation of the organized assembly, “Sy.Ka.Pro.” (Squatted Prosfygika Assembly) in 2012.

The bakery structure started in 2013[1]. Over the years, we realized that the breadmaking process was much more than what we initially perceived. There’s a dynamic that maintains cohesion within the community, brings old and new comrades together in kneading and during difficult times in the community after repression operations. It manages to give us the strength and perspective we need to continue the struggle, making us resist with determination when barbarism threatens to overwhelm us.

Today, the bakery structure operates daily, producing various types of bread and has expanded distribution points beyond the neighborhood. It serves as a reference point for the community, and the process of hands working together to create a common dough, beyond its practical aspect, holds a strong symbolism for what communal life is and how people mold themselves in collective processes.

Video: The Health structure of Squatted Prosfygika

Welcome to the health structure of the community of squatted Prosfygika. Existing since the beginning of the community – evolving ever since in a collective process. It’s able to take care of the needs of the community and furthermore of the neighborhood. In contrast to the states healthcare system it’s centering the social, mental and physical needs of each one. Continuously working against racist and sexist discrimination regarding healthcare. #saveprosfygika

⁨ORGANIZE INTERNATIONALIST BRIGADES TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY THREATENED BY EVICTION IN ATHENS!

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika is one of the biggest self-organized and liberated neighborhoods in Europe, existing since 16 years. Home to 400 inhabitants from 27 different countries, it has succeeded in building a politically united neighborhood with over twenty autonomous structures answering the needs of its inhabitants, as well as an active participation in broader political and social movements.

While the autonomy keeps growing stronger and stronger, so is the repression: Prosfygika is currently facing urgent attacks and threat of eviction by the local government, financed by European Union funds. These plans of gentrification are set to start by July 2026.

Thus, Prosfygika now, more than ever before, decided to open the community, exposing every lie of the State, which claims to “build” something it will never do, something that is already here organized from the below: social housing, children’s and health structures, a bakery, and guesthouses for patients of the nearby oncological hospital and their relatives.

The struggle for creating this autonomy is from the beginning a struggle based on internationalist solidarity, as it learned from the guerilla in the mountains of Kurdistan and from struggles in dozens of other geographies — because the struggle for liberation was, is and will be a global one!

To renovate, build and to struggle together we call for all organizations, collectives and people of solidarity to organize internationalist brigades to come and support us!

If you are:

– crafters of any branch

– medical personnel

– political or revolutionary organizations and individuals

– caring for our future as humanity

get organized and come here collectively!

It is our common struggle and we will win.

Hands Off Prosfygika!

Resistance and memory, from the Kaisariani 200 to Prosfygika

This article was written by the hunger-striking comrade Aristotelis Xantzis. We release this translation on his 30thday of indefinite hunger strike to death in defense of life to prevent the eviction of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

Original article:

https://tvxs.gr/apopseis/arthra-gnomis/prosfygika-o-apergos-peinas-grafei-sto-tvxs-gia-tis-fotografies-ton-200-tis-kaisarianis

The photographs of the 200 executed men of Kaisariani on May Day 1944 emerge perhaps at the most appropriate moment, as we are reminded that those who took the path of resistance did not think of the cost and looked death in the face with a raised fist. After 84 years [sic], they are a breath of life, a source of inspiration and struggle for the new generations.

In these photographs it is not only these unyielding fighters who are depicted, but sketched in their implacability is all of the resistance to the brutality of the Haydari, Merlin, and Akronafplia camps, as well as of so many other hells.

Every one of the 200, just like so many still-“unknown soldiers” —because they were, are, and will be the true unknown soldiers who gave their lives against the occupiers— had a name, a story, ideals. They were workers, trade-unionists, members of the KKE [Communist Party of Greece], Trotskyists, Archeio-Marxists. The majority of them were handed over from the Metaxas regime to the occupying powers, having been condemned under Venizelos’s Idionymon1, which was maintained and reinforced by Metaxas by replacing it with the so-called “emergency law”.

The declaration of these historic photographs to be a “monument” is not simple hypocrisy of the Ministry of Culture, but rather shows the meaning that the current government ascribes to “monuments”. For the government which gives land water and land to American interests and to the oligarchs, which prepares the modern Akronafplia camps in the form of eight new prisons, which is to blame for the deaths of hundreds of refugees and immigrants, which threatens independent journalism, which paves the way for new Idionyma with anti-communist korones2, “monument” means distortion of the history of the resistance.

For the government of the New Penal Code, of the executive state, of PREDATOR3, of OPEKEPE4, of Tempi,5 of the extreme repression, which gave the Byzantine Museum to the Glücksberg family for a dinner party; for the government of the vile shamelessness which grips the ruling class, “monument” means oblivion in the historical memory.

For the government of the political progeny of the Nazi collaborators and of the Tagmata Asfaleias6, is it possible to respect this historical memory?

Today, the same government is trying to constrain the Community of Squatted Prosfygika of Alexandras Avenue, with the pretext of the creation of social housing and hosting structures for companions of the Agios Savvas cancer hospital. The Prosfygika buildings on Alexandras Ave., a remaining monument of contemporary history because of the marks of bullets and mortar shells from the battles of the Dekemvriana7, are threatened to be plundered in the name of gentrification of the broader Ampelokipoi area. Along with them, the plunder of historical memory as well as the continuity of the resistance.

But what is the Community of Squatted Prosfygika? What does it represent? Why is it such a great danger for the Mitsotakis government? What are the stakes?

In these 16 years of its operation, the Community of Prosfygika has reinforced the participation of individuals in shared issues through direct-democratic processes in regular assemblies, plenary conferences, and a plethora of social solidarity structures. Structures for housing, for food, for health, for education and childcare. Structures for hosting cancer patients who are hospitalized at the Agios Savvas cancer hospital along with their companions. Structures for women’s empowerment, culture, art, technical support for occupants, and many others.

Just as in the period of the occupation, until the end of the Dekemvriana, the “National Solidarity” organization was the one that organized bread lines, built daycares, pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and houses, while the political ancestors of the contemporary elite lined up with the [Axis] occupiers; so today, the structures that suffer the most severe criminalization and repression are those which really try to solve the social problems that the elite has created.

Just as after the Dekemvriana they closed and demolished with explosives the offices of “National Solidarity”, arrested and imprisoned its officials, destroyed and looted its structures; so today in the same way they make attempts at the social solidarity structures. This is the main reason for the attacks by the Mitsotakis government on the Community of Prosfygika.

Prosfygika is not a monument only because it is marked by the English bullets and mortar shells that butchered the Athenian people. Prosfygika was the place where, hidden away, the resistance forces set their ambush of the Ethnofylaki [“national guard”] whο were on their way to free the collaborators in the Averof prisons8. It was the passage used for the destruction of the warehouses in the English barracks. It was a disputed territory between opposing forces. It was another place of uprooted refugees that formed the backbone of the resistance.

Today, the members of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika are under constant attack because of their participation in social resistances, in the Tempi movement, in marches in solidarity with the Palestinian people, in mobilizations on the 6th of December and 17th of November9, because of their social proposal and actions against the policies of barbarity.

If we accepted that the Prosfygika buildings are merely a “monument,” empty of content, that the 200 of Kaisariani are merely a “monument” as defined by the Ministry of Culture, it would be like spitting on the monuments and memorials of those who resisted. It would be like spitting in the face of the downtrodden sectors of society who groan from the anti-social policies of those in power.

It is our duty to continue to exist so that we can strengthen and broaden the world of community, social self-organization, and solidarity in the face of policies of obscurantism, corruption, and repression.

In the face of the political descendants of the collaborators and the Tagmata Asfaleias, we honor the 200 people executed in Kaisariani on May Day 1944. We honor the historical memory of Prosfygika, certain that we are on the right path.

Weekly Updates

Today, on March 11, the Hungerstrike of Aristotelis Chantzis has reached day 35.

The different works in the Community of Squatted Prosfygika are continuing to develop.

Today we also commemorate Berkin Elvan, a Kurdish revolutionary who was murdered in 2018 in the age of 15 by the Turkish Police while he went to buy bread. The collective bakery of Prosfygika is named after him.

PRESS RELEASE 06/03/2026 OF THE MEDICAL MONITORING TEAM FOR HUNGER STRIKER ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS

Who has been on a hunger strike since February 5th, 2026 (Day 30).

During the physical examination, intensifying signs of orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia upon rising are observed.

The hunger striker has lost a total of 15.5% of his initial body weight. Blood tests indicate low serum urea levels and reversible hypoglycemic episodes accompanied by numbness in the upper limbs. These findings are consistent with starvation.

It is clear that hunger striker A. Chantzis, now on the 30th day of his hunger strike, faces a risk of serious complications as he is in a state of prolonged fasting. He presents increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risks and faces an escalating danger of complications and arrhythmia’s.

His demands express the collective demands of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika at Av. Alexandras and are as follows:

  • IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT FOR THE “REDEVELOPMENT” OF THE PROSFYGIKA BUILDINGS BY THE REGIONAL GOVERNMENT OF ATTICA, AND OF THE PLANNING FOR THE SUPPRESSION AND EVACUATION OF THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA.
  • THAT ALL RESIDENTS OF PROSFYGIKA REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES, IN THE PLACE AND THE AREA WHERE THEY LIVE AND HAVE CONNECTED SOCIALLY, CULTURALLY, AND ORGANICALLY.
  • THAT TANGIBLE GUARANTEES BE GIVEN FOR THE RESTORATION OF TPROSFYGIKA BY THE NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION (NPO) “RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS OF PROSFYGIKA AV. ALEXANDRAS REFUGEE HOUSING NPO” WITH ITS OWN FUNDING! – NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE “REDEVELOPMENT” OF PROSFYGIKA!

Hunger striker A. Chantzis declares that he does not intend to stop his abstention from food until the above demands are met.
It is the responsibility of the competent authorities to immediately satisfy these demands, given the continuously deteriorating health of the hunger striker.

Update from the Community 09.02.2026

Yesterday evening we had the first open assembly about the state of emergency in the community, which was also the first big open call we had since the start of the hungerstrike on Thursday. The assembly had massive participation by several hundred people. Numerous organizations, from different parts of the movement, made statements supporting the community in the current struggle. The assembly showed a big strength and unity in face of the attacks of the state.

After the assembly the cops provoked and terrorized the neighborhood by positioning them on the exits of the neighborhood and constant drone presence over our heads. After an intervention from us they left. Their weak attempt of provocation can not change the fact how successful and important the evening was for us.

Today we are in the fifth day of the hungerstrike which is going strong. We will have a press conference on Wednesday, which will also be live-streamed in Greek. We will try to add subtitles as fast as possible and then send it also here.

We thank you for all the solidarity and support we received the past days!

Either we will win or we will win!

EMERGENCY ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING AN IMMINENT ATTACK AND EVICTION OF PROSFYGIKA ON ALEXANDRAS AVENUE

SUPPORT – SPREAD – RESIST

During the summer of 2025, secretly, the Region of Attica, through a programmatic agreement, initiated the planning for the repression and eviction of the Community of the Squatted Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue.

With the beginning of 2026, it set in motion the new phase of its plan, using paid articles by government mouthpieces and promoting all the steps that foresee the violent eviction of the Community of Prosfygika within the next six months and — as usual — a major feast of public money.

Over the last decade, this is the fourth time that the state and the government have attempted to evict and plunder Prosfygika. This time appears to be the most serious and is about to be implemented immediately. All indications show that there is a plan that provides both the funding of the project—whose total estimated cost amounts to €15 million with European funding from the Attica Regional ESPA 2021–2027—and, at the level of propaganda, the supposed creation of social housing and hostels for relatives of patients of the anticancer “St. Savvas” Hospital, attempting to exploit social sensitivities and reflexes.

They will not succeed, this time either!

Prosfygika constitutes a Community of more than 400 people—Greeks, refugees, and migrants—including 50 children, vulnerable social groups, people with serious mental health issues, cancer patients, elderly people etc. Over its 16 years of operation, drug dealing and production spots—including hard drugs—that had plagued the neighborhood with the tolerance of GADA (General Police Administration of Attica) have been removed, and 22 autonomous structures of social self-sufficiency, benefit, and self-organization have been established for the people of the Community and the wider areas of Ambelokipi and Gkyzi.
Indicatively, we mention:

    • The Children’s House and Self-Education Structure and the Self- Organized Nursery School, operating daily with a full educational program for the children of the Community of Prosfygika and the widerneighborhood, in direct cooperation with schools, parents’ associations, and teachers’ unions in Ambelokipi, across Attica, and nationwide.
    • The Health Structure and Social Pharmacy, offering care to neighborhood residents in need, in cooperation with dozens of self-organized health structures, social clinics, and healthcare workers’ unions in panhellenic level.
    • The Hosting Structure for Patients and their Companions from the Anticancer Hospital “St. Savvas” , in cooperation with the hospital employees’ association.
    • The Collective Bakery Structure “Berkin Elvan” producing bread and pastries daily for residents of the neighborhood and all of Athens.
    • The Technical Works Structure for the continuous maintenance of Prosfygika buildings.
    • The Collective Café and Cinema Structure for children and adults, offering entertainment and contributing to the cultural development of residents of the neighborhood and Athens more broadly.
    • The Social Center, which hosts the Community’s weekly general decision making assembly and the Library and Reading Room Structure of the neighborhood. Over the years it has also hosted numerous events, presentations, and assemblies of social, political, and cultural character, both of the Community and of other social groups and collectives.
    • The Women’s Structure, aimed at the collectivization and
empowerment of women and femininities, the creation and
dissemination of a culture opposed to the patriarchal system, also
functioning as an emergency shelter for women and femininities in
      need.
    • The Solidarity Crew, hosted within the Community’s infrastructure,
which provides food five days a week to dozens of people in the center of
      Athens.

All Community structures are open to everyone and operate on the basis of self-organization and social solidarity.

Already within the last year, the Community has publicly announced its decision to carry out the external renovation of the Prosfygika buildings, through self-financing and with the participation and support of architects, civil engineers, and other technical specialists. The Region’s plan is a response intended to preempt this social initiative in order to lay hands on public money.

This new attempt by the Region constitutes a central political directive and decision of the Mitsotakis regime to dismantle the largest social project currently existing within the urban fabric of Athens—and nationwide—and one of the largest in Europe, which has attracted the attention and interest of universities and cultural and educational institutions in Greece and abroad.

Beyond its social character, the Community of Prosfygika, has consistently been on the front line of social, political, class-based, and internationalist struggles, while militants from Greece, Europe, and revolutionary organizations from Turkey and Kurdistan also reside within the Community.

The Mitsotakis regime sees Prosfygika both as a political opponent it seeks to destroy and as an economic asset it dreams of plundering and exploiting.

This is a political decision that, behind the lies about “neighborhood development,” aims at expelling people and dismantling social models of self- organization and social contribution. It is clear that, among other things, it is yet another pre-election trick by a collapsing government whose only remaining product is the doctrine of “law and order.”

    • They are liars when they claim the Region cares about social housing. Prosfygika already constitute social housing for hundreds of people whom the crisis pushed onto the streets and the collapse of all social structures forced into misery and marginalization. Their plan to throw more than 400 people onto the streets in order to accommodate 50 of their own is the height of hypocrisy and inhumanity of a system that cares exclusively about its own profit and the plunder of public and European funds. It is a shameless excuse to loot already-existing social housing in the name of new social housing, while 80,000 vacant apartments owned by the Municipality of Athens remain empty and unused in the city center.
    • They are liars when they claim the Region cares about the relatives of cancer patients whom the Community has hosted and cared for for years — people who often sleep in their cars for days or weeks whiletheir loved ones undergo long-term treatments. The Community of Prosfygika already provides healthy living conditions and support through its own labor and resources. The Region plans to throw relatives of cancer patients onto the streets while setting up clientalist relationships with people in need. At the sametime, countless properties owned by the state and the Church lie just a few blocks away from Prosfygika.
    • They are liars when they claim the Region cares about social issues in the neighborhood, when the Prosfygika is an example of harmonious coexistence of people from all over the world—27 different nationalities and corresponding languages, cultures, and religions. It is the only neighborhood adjacent to an OKANA (Drug Addiction Treatment Organization) unit without a drug dealing hotspot. The only public safety problem in the area is the policies of GADA and the Ministry of Public Order, which periodically invade the neighborhood with tear gas — bordering two hospitals — to dismantle a self-organized Community promoting a different model of social equality and justice.
    • They are liars when they claim to care about the utilization of Prosfygika and the development of Ambelokipi. The redevelopment of Prosfygika will cause rents and living costs to skyrocket across the area, forcibly displacing dozens and hundreds of our neighbors who cannot withstand the high cost of life. This condition will gradually affect all surrounding areas, changing the social composition by displacing existing residents in favor of the wealthier.

We call on every person with conscience and empathy to stand beside the Community of Prosfygika, against the plans of eviction and plunder of this historic neighborhood of resistance, self-organization, and refuge.

We call on everyone to mobilize and communicate our struggle in their neighborhood, family and social circles, schools, unions, and workplaces, to protect Prosfygika from the predatory plans of government grand swindlers.

Those who did not care about the lives of 57 people on the trains. Those who have turned Greece into Europe’s dumping ground. Those who have dismantled every social structure and public service of health, education, housing, and culture. Those who let so many people die during COVID. Those who have reduced farmers and the countryside to beggars. Those who have driven half a million young people out of the country over the past decade.None of them deserve any trust regarding Prosfygika, and everyone must know the dirty plans hidden behind their words.

The eviction and repression of the Prosfygika will have incalculable consequences for the mental and physical health of dozens of children, elderly people, and patients in the Community. Many of them will not be alive in the year following the eviction—by responsibility of the government and its agents.

The eviction and repression of the Refugee Housing will also affect the movement and all ongoing struggles, as every liberated space that is lost is a blow to the common struggle against exploitation and injustice experienced by nearly all of society.

For our part, we have a responsibility and a duty to defend the homes we have cared for selflessly for years as if they were our own, keeping alive a national and architectural monument that state planning would have allowed to collapse in order to profit from its reconstruction. We have a responsibility and a duty to defend the people of our Community, who would otherwise end up sleeping in cardboard boxes, in hunger and misery.

We publicly declare that we will not give up a single inch of land to the regime and its companies, and that we will fight with all our strength to practically cancel their dirty plans — even with our lives. We have a historical and social duty to struggle and to continue.

We will ensure that the enormous cost we are forced to bear to protect our neighborhood and Community will be even greater for the government and its agents.

IF WE FALL, WE WILL FALL ON THEIR HEADS

We call on:

    • Everyone, individuals, collectives, unions, associations, organizations, to do everything possible to break the operation of repression and eviction Prosfygika
    • Everyone, individuals, collectives, structures, initiatives, to stand alongside or come to live in Prosfygika.
    • Everyone to remain vigilant against possible provocations by the state and police, who will attempt to divide and break the Community and our common struggle.
