INTERNATIONALIST BRIGADE OF VICTORY

In two days the internationalist brigade of victory will start travelling from Vienna to Prosfygika.

The summer will be a crucial time for us both regarding hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis health situation as well as the threat of repression already announced by the spokesman of the parliament Marinakis and visible through the undercover police presence at Evangelismos hospital where Aristotelis is currently in the intensive care unit.
We are calling for this brigade to support Prosfygika in this crucial time and to strengthen the resistance and intensify our internationalist relations.

The route will bring us from central Europe all the way to Athens, on the way we will stop in different cities to connect to the local struggles. It is possible that stops are still added to the route as we are still in communication to finalize this, we will of course update on this.
Join the brigade at any of the stops or organize brigades from your localities to come to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in the summer.

Reach out to us via mail or private message if you want to be part of this.

THE STRUGGLE HAS WON,
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
NOW IS THE TIME TO GO TO PROSFYGIKA!

INVITATION TO WEEKLY UPDATE AND PLANNING CALL

📆Wednesday 1.7. 20:00 CET
🔗https://lecture.senfcall.de/sav-loj-48f-nxo

On the 24.06.2026 Prosfygika declared victory and decided to end the hunger strikes of Aristotelis Chantzis (140 days) and Suzon Doppagne (55 days).

The demands of the hunger strike have been met to a large degree urging for the Regional government of Attica to cancel the illegal plan of eviction of Prosfygika.

The struggle did not end, it will continue and it will and needs to grow even bigger. Therefore we see the need to continue with the weekly update and planning calls. Additionally we call for an internationalist brigade of victory, starting in Vienna and traveling through different cities of the Balkans towards Prosfygika. We call on you to join this, more information can be found on our Social Media and Website.

Every Wednesday evening we make an update and planning call, to analyze the political situation regarding Prosfygika, answer questions and speak about the strategical next steps of the internationalist campaign and internationalist action.

See you there!

HEALTH UPDATE REGARDING ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS – TRANSFER TO THE EVAGGELISMOS ICU

The health of Aristotelis Chantzis is in extremely critical condition. He is presenting multi-organ failure with cardiac damage, hepatic dysfunction, respiratory failure requiring high-flow oxygen administration, rhabdomyolysis, bone marrow suppression, and electrolyte disturbances within the context of prolonged starvation and in combination with severe refeeding syndrome.

At this moment, he is being transferred from the ICU of “G. Gennimatas” to the ICU of “Evaggelismos.”

We call for a solidarity gathering for our comrade Aristos, at 16:30 outside the Evaggelismos hospital on Ypsilantou Street (Evaggelismos Park).

Update on the health situation of Suzon Doppagne

Suzon Doppagne, who has been on hunger strike since May 1st, was admitted to “Elpis” Hospital following the end of her hunger strike on Wednesday, June 24th, after 55 days.

Her hospitalization is a preventive measure aimed at monitoring and addressing the potentially dangerous complications associated with the refeeding process.

Her health condition is currently stable.

THE STRUGGLE HAS WON – THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!

Over the past five months, an extraordinary struggle for life and death has been unfolding for the defence of Prosfygika on Alexandras Av. This was a struggle against eviction, displacement, and the destruction of the largest self-organized initiative for social housing, solidarity, and the common good in Greece and across Europe. The aggressors have been a socially destructive regime and Regional Governor N. Chardalias with their gentrification plans and a policy of repression against movements and people.

At the forefront of this struggle, comrade Aristotelis Chantzis (on hunger strike since February 5, 2026) and comrade Suzon Doppagne (on hunger strike since May 1, 2026) have voluntarily carried a heavy load.

It is a struggle that has been victorious from the very beginning, because the only lost struggle is the one that was never fought. It is a just, selfless, and collective struggle—not only for the more than 400 residents of Prosfygika, but for society as a whole. For all of us. For the right to shelter, to life, to dignity, and for people’s right to organize, to self-organize, and to shape their own lives in dark times.

It is also a struggle that started from the grassroots and has spread everywhere—in Greece and internationally—throughout society, among social movements, among ordinary people, and even within institutional bodies and political parties. This struggle is victorious not only in strictly political sense but also in ways that are deeply social. Through its promotion of openness and inclusiveness it managed to bring together many different people, enabling the formation of a movement that set an example of how to build victorious struggles and forge social fronts of resistance in times of recession, drought, and widespread fragmentation—despite, of course, its mistakes and weaknesses.

Yesterday, the Municipality of Athens issued its second resolution, which serves as the final nail in the coffin of the Chardalias plan, which had already collapsed in every aspect—technical, political, and economical. Moreover, the resolution largely addresses our just and self-evident demands, within the limits of its capabilities:

  1. It called on the Region of Attica to halt the implementation of the decision to gentrify the neighborhood of Prosfygika and, at the same time, on the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to suspend its hunger strike.
  2. It recognized the Community of Squatted Prosfygika as an autonomous entity and a collective social actor, and as an equal partner with a decisive role in any future effort to restore the neighborhood of Prosfygika.
  3. It agreed that all residents of Prosfygika will remain in their homes and, even in the event of restoration work, will be relocated within the neighborhood, thereby also accepting the phased restoration of the buildings that we propose.
  4. It emphasized the Municipality’s responsibilities. The Municipality has clear powers and responsibilities, both regarding the permits required at various stages of building restoration and in the area of social housing. The Municipality has guaranteed that it will neither assist nor grant the necessary approvals for the project, thereby blocking any action by the Regional Authority that deviates from the framework defined above.

As for the abstention vote by Subversive Alliance and People’s Rally factions, we fully respect their position in light of the concerns and disagreements they have raised. After all, we, too, feel the need to express our disagreement with any comparison between the value of human life and a painted wall. Especially when that life has been left by institutional indifference and economic interests to melt away like wax for 140 days, with its fate hanging by a thread.

We also feel the need to state that we maintain our doubts about the implementation of the commitments made by the institutions, as demonstrated by so many cases. A recent such case is that of hunger striker Panos Routsis, the father of Dennis, who was murdered in Tempi. Mr. Routsis is still waiting for the government to fulfill its promise to exhume his son’s body. We expect these commitments to be honored and call on the solidarity movement to remain vigilant.

Today, following the massive movement of solidarity and support and the multilayered recognition of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, the Mitsotakis government and the Region of Attica stand alone against the whole of society. They have nothing left to oppose the Community with, except the weapon of raw violence. We are here to stand together against it, just as we have done throughout all these years of harsh repression carried out by the most reactionary political forces.

Based on the above developments on Wednesday, June 24, we as the Community held discussions with the hunger strikers Aristos and Suzon and collectively decided to suspend the hunger strike while continuing the struggle through other means until our demands are fully met.

The positive outcome of the struggle so far and the satisfaction of the greater part of our demands allow us to bring the hunger strike to a victorious conclusion. This also means avoiding the risk of losing two people who are so valuable to us and to society as a whole. At the same time, it is also to avoid burdening with deaths a movement and a public, which is either unfamiliar with self-sacrificing struggles or believes this struggle has already been won.

Finally, if Regional Governor Nikos Chardalias’s true objective from the outset was indeed the restoration and preservation of the buildings and their historical significance, we remain open to dialogue to find common ground, based on the continued presence of all residents of Prosfygika and the recognition of the existing self-organized community.
The solutions to the problems of our times are found in partnership with society, not in opposition to it. In contrast to the plans of revenge, hostility, and political extermination on the part of the state, the regional government, and the Mitsotakis government, this struggle is a struggle of the defense of life and dignity and to set a different example for our societies and people.

To conclude, we must extend our heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you—most of whom were strangers to us—who stand by our side, from your own standpoint, in this just and beautiful struggle. We take full accountability for any mistakes we have made and are willing to review them together with those interested in such discussion. Finally, we call for vigilance regarding the critical state of Aristotelis Chantzis’s health, regarding the possibility of vindictive actions against the hunger strikers and our Community as a whole, as well as the continuation of government’s and region’s hostile plans against the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.

FOR PROSFYGIKA – FOR LIFE – FOR DIGNITY!
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!
EITHER WE WILL WIN, OR WE WILL WIN!

INTERNATIONALIST BRIGADE OF VICTORY

We call on every individual, collective, and organisation to join the internationalist brigade of victory coming to Athens, starting on the 2nd of July in Vienna, travelling through different cities towards Prosfygika. To support the Struggle of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika.
Because this struggle is our common struggle!

Yesterday, on the 24th of June, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika announced the end of the hunger strike until death for the defense of life and the Community, by the comrades Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne. In answer to the positive voting of the municipality of Athens on a statement containing – with gaps – the demands of the hunger strike urging for the Regional government of Attica to cancel the illegal plan of eviction of Prosfygika.
Furthermore, there will be a dialogue in which the Community is respected as a participant and essential for the discussions concerning the neighborhood of Prosfygika.

The change in the stance of the institutions, from describing Prosfygika as an empty neighborhood and not speaking about the hunger strike, to where we are now and what we consider our win, is the outcome of 140 days of mobilization in Athens, Greece, and Internationally. We want to thank you a lot for this immense and constant support from all over the world!

As of writing this text, Aristotelis Chantzis’ health continued to deteriorate rapidly, in the start of the refeeding process, leading to a precautious transfer to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Also, hunger striker Suzon Doppagne is now starting the refeeding process, which is also closely monitored by doctors as she reached 55 days of Hungerstrike.
The refeeding process is the most critical and also a deadly phase of the hunger striker, as the metabolism has to get used to nutrition again.
Especially the first weeks of this process are crucial for the lives and the health condition of the hunger strikers.

As we see it, even though we achieved our demands in a formal way, this is not a complete victory. The next period of time will be fundamental for the defense of this victory.
We won another battle. The upcoming summer time will be crucial not only for the health of the hunger strikers but also for the ongoing process concerning the eviction plan and in terms of repression. Especially with the recognition of the Community and for the renovations of the buildings, we need support on the ground.
Corresponding with the published call to come to Prosfygika in the summer, we ask for people to come and actively defend the community, strengthen the existing 23 structures, participate in the restoration of the buildings, as well as support with expanding the barrication of buildings and support the organization of social kitchens and nutrition of the neighborhood.

How strong internationalist solidarity can be has been shown in the last months with the support for the Community. Now we want to strengthen these bonds for a long-term perspective to fight our future struggles together!

Therefore, we call for the internationalist brigade of victory coming to Athens. We will upload the pressure on the responsible institutions and the Greek state with internationalist gatherings in Front of Greek embassies and EU-Houses on the way to Athens.

With local events and meetings we want to connect with different movements upon our common enemies and fight.

Please reach out to us when you want to be part of it.

A clear route and corresponding dates will follow soon!

CRITICAL HEALTH CONDITION OF ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS

Statement from the hospital doctors monitoring his health, June 24, 2026

The hunger striker is hospitalized due to acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy with double vision and ataxic gait, and is also experiencing severe electrolyte imbalances that predispose him to life-threatening arrhythmias.

His condition remains extremely critical, with very severe, persistent hypoglycemic episodes, and, due to swallowing difficulties resulting from muscle weakness, he has developed aspiration into the respiratory tract and hypoxemia.

The generalized, severe muscle weakness has also affected the respiratory muscles and the muscles of the face and eyes.

He is being administered inhaled bronchodilators and oxygen via a nasal cannula.

His condition is extremely serious and steadily worsening, and the ongoing complications make it life-threatening.

Failure to meet these demands is equivalent to a death sentence.

Press Release: Hunger Striker Aristotelis Chantzis Hospitalized as Health Reaches Critical Stage on Day 138; Over 5,000 Rally in Athens in Solidarity

ATHENS, Greece: June 22, 2026

Aristotelis Chantzis, who has been on hunger strike for 138 days in defence of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika, was hospitalised yesterday following the onset of acute neurological symptoms. His condition has deteriorated rapidly in recent days.

Chantzis currently weighs 35 kg; a loss of 44% of his initial body weight, and presents with a BMI of 13.3. He is severely weakened, with oedema in both lower limbs and an inability to stand unaided, significantly limiting his mobility.

One day after his hospitalization, more than 5,000 people gathered in front of the Greek Parliament in Athens to demand the cancellation of the planned eviction of the Prosfygika Community and to call for all residents to remain in their homes and neighborhood : the place where they have built lasting social and communal ties.

About the Community of Squatted Prosfygika

Over the past 16 years, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika has established a self-organised and cooperative home for over 400 residents from more than 27 countries, operating on the principles of equality, horizontal governance, and direct democracy. The community sustains 22 autonomous structures serving both its residents and the surrounding districts, including a children’s structure, a collective kitchen and café, a bakery, a hosting facility for cancer patients and their relatives, a health structure and social pharmacy, and technical and logistics structures.

Disputed Decision and Threat of Eviction

Despite this established community, the Region of Attica approved Decision No. 864/2025, which describes the Prosfygika buildings as “vacant” and advances a redevelopment project funded through European resources. Residents and supporters reject this characterisation as factually false and legally unfounded, warning that if implemented it would result in the forced displacement of more than 400 people and the destruction of one of the largest self-organised communities in Europe.

In opposition to the planned eviction, two community members have declared hunger strikes until death: Aristotelis Chantzis, who began his strike on 5 February 2026, and Suzon Doppagne, who began hers on 1 May 2026.

Government Response

Despite the life-threatening condition of both hunger strikers, spokespeople for the Mitsotakis Government (Nea Demokratia) and the Region of Attica have announced the continuation of eviction plans. Both Chantzis and Doppagne have reiterated their resolve to continue.

Statements

Aristotelis Chantzis, speaking on his way to hospital, declared: “The struggle does not retreat — it has now begun. We will win until justice or death. We are responsible for 400 lives, we are responsible for our society, and we will win. Our struggle is just and I will not retreat until justice is done.”

Suzon Doppagne, upon visiting Chantzis in hospital, stated: “We’re right — we know it, you know it, society knows it. The truth is out there. We know who bears accountability for Aristos’ death, and that is the Government of Mitsotakis and the Region of Attica. Aristos will continue, I will continue, the community will continue. Either we will win — or we will win.”

INTERNATIONAL CALL TO ACTION!

Yesterday, on the 138th day of his hungerstrike until death, in the defense of life, Aristotelis Chantzis, member of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika is being transported to a hospital. His health is ultimately deteriorating- weighing only 35 kilogramms, his life is hanging by a threat.

The Government of Mitsotakis in Greece, the regional government of Athens, and all other institutions involved in the contract of destruction of Prosfygika have failed to meet the demands of the hungerstrikers, those of 400 people living in the occupied neighbourhood.
We will defend the life of our comrades by any means. We will not let Aristos fall.
We call upon the Responsible Institutions to finally meet the demands of the hunger strikers. The End of this hunger strike lies fully within their capability and responsibility.
We urge every single one of you to take action, now, locally and globally. Aristos and Suzon are giving proof to their unyielding will and determination to defend the Community and to defend life itself.
Now it is our turn to act.
Assemble your comrades, plan actions now, be prepared and follow the updates closely. We have no time to loose.
Take to the streets.
Take to the embassies and parliaments.
Let’s gather all our forces and lets claim this victory, here and today.
I tha nikisoume
I tha nikisoume!

Statement of the hunger striker Suzon Doppagne in front of the Emergency Department at the Georgios Gennimatas hospital

“We’re right, we know it, you know it, society knows it. The truth is out there; we know who has the accountability of Aristos death and that is the government of Mitsotakis, the Region of Attica. Aristos will continue, I will continue, the community will continue. The only thing I have to declare once again is that: EITHER WE WILL WIN OR WE WILL WIN.”

Before being admitted to the hospital, he stated:

“The struggle does not retreat, it has now begun. We will win until justice or death. We are responsible for 400 lives, we are responsible for our society and we will win. Our struggle is just and I will not retreat until justice is done. Our demands are just.”

At the time of writing, the members of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika are organizing a gathering in front of Georgios Gennimatas Hospital in solidarity with Aristotelis Chantzis.

We also condemn the unacceptable situation at the Emergency Department, where the on-call neurologists have refused to examine Aristotelis Chantzis, while allowing police to enter the hospital.

❗️Urgent announcement

At this moment, hunger striker Aristotelis Chantzis, who is on his 138th day of hunger strike, is being transported to the “Georgios Genimatas” Hospital with acute neurological symptoms.

His condition is extremely critical, he now weighs just 35 kg, and his life hangs by a thread.

Full responsibility lies with Nikos Chardalias, the Mitsotakis government, the Ministry of Culture, as well as other involved entities such as the Public Employment Service and the Municipality of Athens, which, despite having the solution in their hands, have failed to act; ultimately, they will all bear equal responsibility for the first death of a Hunger striker in Greece.

URGENT PRESS RELEASE 21/06/2026 FROM THE MEDICAL TEAM MONITORING THE HEALTH OF HUNGER STRIKER ARISTOTELIS CHANTZIS

RAPID DETERIORATION OF HIS HEALTH

APPEAL TO ALL RELEVANT AUTHORITIES TO MEET THE DEMANDS OF THE HUNGER STRIKE

The hunger striker is on his 137th day of hunger strike and is severely emaciated, weighing 36.2 kg and having lost a total of 44% of his initial body weight, with a BMI of 13.3%. The hunger striker is now severely weakened, with edema in both lower limbs and an inability to stand, which significantly limit his mobility. He is also having difficulty speaking. His health has deteriorated rapidly during the last days.

The blood tests revealed low serum urea levels, hyperuricemia, symptomatic hypoglycemia and new-onset transaminasemia with rhabdomyolysis. From the neurological examination it was revealed absent tendon reflexes in the lower limbs, consistent with starvation, and daily lower limb numbness leading to gait disorders with difficulty moving.

The episodes of orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia upon standing and intense dizziness with fatigue have worsened and are now significantly affecting his ability to function, while serious sleep disorders also exist. At the same time, persistent electrocardiographic abnormalities predisposing to fatal arrhythmias are observed daily.

With every passing 24 hours, the hunger striker faces an ever-increasing cardiovascular and metabolic risk, with dangerous, life-threatening complications.

His demands reflect the collective demands of the Community:

  • IMMEDIATE CANCELLATION OF THE CONTRACT BY THE REGION OF ATTICA.
  • ALL RESIDENTS OF PROSFYGIKA TO REMAIN IN THEIR HOMES, IN THE PLACE AND AREA WHERE THEY LIVE AND HAVE ESTABLISHED SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND ORGANICAL TIES.
  • CONCRETE GUARANTEES TO BE GIVEN FOR THE RESTORATION OF PROSFYGIKA BY THE NON-PROFIT COVIL LAW COMPANY KNOWN AS “RESIDENTS AND FRIENDS OF PROSFYGIKA ALEXANDRAS AV.” USING ITS OWN FUNDING! – NOT A SINGLE EURO OF PUBLIC MONEY FOR THE “RESTORATION” OF PROSFYGIKA!

The hunger has declared that he does not intend to end his hunger strike despite the health risks, until his demands are met.

After 137 days of hunger strike and given the steadily worsening health condition of Aristotelis Chantzis, everyone involved in the contract is to be held accountable for any complications or even a fatal outcome, especially the Regional Administration of Attica and all the relevant institutions. The systematic cover-up of the hunger strike by the majority of the media, as well as the criminal silence of the government and the relevant authorities, are contributing to driving the hunger striker to his death.

As healthcare professionals, we once again issue an urgent appeal to all relevant authorities to take a position and immediately meet the demands of the hunger strike.

Update on the struggle of Prosfygika

The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, announced on friday, June 12th, that the Municipality of Athens is requesting a dialogue on the situation of the Prosfygika housing complex on Alexandras Avenue. He proposes an open and organized dialogue including the government and the regional department of Attika. The statement also calls on political parties to take a clear position so that the loss of further human rights and human lives can be avoided.

This development is certainly influenced by the formal question on the legitimacy of the EU funding that was submitted to the European Commission by 33 members of the European Parliament from the Socialists, the Greens and the Left.

A harsh and costly struggle of the Hunger Strikers Aristotelis Chantzis (Day 132) and Suzon Doppagne (Day 47) and a massive movement of solidarity across Greece and internationally led to this move.

The Community published a statement on this (https://saveprosfygika.gr/index.php/en/2026/06/15/statement-by-the-community-of-squatted-prosfygika-of-alexandras-av-regarding-the-latest-statement-by-athens-mayor-charis-doukas/).
We regard the initiative of Doukas as a positive step, even though it is long overdue. The words have to be followed by actions as soon as possible.

We continue to struggle to ensure that the Prosfygika neighborhood remains a living community: a social project of social housing, solidarity, public benefit and collective memory.

A Greeting of Solidarity to Greece – From Maja

A Greeting of Solidarity to Greece

Dear people of Prosfygika, dear ones who fight together.

A powerful person is said to have once said that our word is written on water, washed over and drowned by the next wave, lost in the next storm of violence and destruction. You hold no fear of this lie; you look the monster in the eye.

May there be places of strength for you, wherever your paths may lead, and let life dare to blur every trace of origin.

Shadowless you are not, no, in your shadows we rest, as at midday at the foot of the mulberry trees. The wind in the branches sings, carrying your word of pain and loss. There in the shade the leaves dance, passing onward your courage to live.

May your struggles bear new buds, steady your certainty, summon our conscience. So that you know: your struggle is neither lost nor lonely; it asks us when we will act.

Just now I lay on the floor, looked up, and saw white, the white of cotton. I looked to the sky, saw a cell ceiling, and rested, remembering the days a year ago when I went into hunger strike to rob the white walls of their silence, laying bare their shadows. Empty I never felt; I fought, fought at the side of so many, the unrelenting. I knew what for: so that the shadows of greed grow dangerous to the indifferent and the corruptible, so that they, alongside us, break free from fear.

Today you are there, I am here, and all I hold is the word of connection, of being bound as comrades, the urge to stand at your side, despite the distance, despite the walls painted white, despite the violence forcing its way into your gardens, your homes, your communities. May rage and grief sharpen our eyes to what we have created. Let them believe we wrote merely on water. So be it, for we have written ourselves into life, for the drop of water is never without the power to wake blossoms from buds, fruits and seeds, shadows and gardens, without ever passing away. So too the struggle for freedom.

May life stay with you, in deepest solidarity, Maja

STATEMENT BY THE COMMUNITY OF SQUATTED PROSFYGIKA OF ALEXANDRAS AV. REGARDING THE LATEST STATEMENT BY ATHENS MAYOR CHARIS DOUKAS

After a harsh and costly struggle, marked by the hunger strikes of Aristotelis Chantzis (129 days) and Suzon Doppagne (44 days), and a massive solidarity movement across Greece and internationally—which, in fact, led 33 Members of the European Parliament (from the Left, Greens, Socialists, and Non-Affiliated) to submit a question to the European Commission, the Mayor of Athens now acknowledges that the consultation with those directly affected, which is required by law, has not taken place.

Contrary to the government’s official claims in Parliament (responses by Papathanasis and Spanakis to the topical questions posed by E. Tsakalotos, A. Kazamias, and Z. Konstantopoulou), on the one hand regarding an allegedly exhausted dialogue and on the other regarding fearmongering, as well as the threats of mass eviction by government spokesperson P. Marinakis in response to C. Avramidis’s question, emphasizing “that the law is above human rights,” it is clear that a closed-door dialogue—which excludes the Community that has lived in, cared for, and defended Prosfygika for nearly 20 years—is simply invalid.

The Mayor of Athens took the initiative to seek “the broadest possible social consensus,” recognizing the Community as the most natural partner in this process. He also calls on Regional Governor N. Chardalias, the government, all political parties, and the relevant institutions to take a positive stance in this dialogue.

We view this initiative positively and as a step in the right direction. Consequently, we accept the invitation and declare that we are here, open to a substantive dialogue, without preconceived decisions, with the Community as the natural dialogue partner and where every discussion will begin with the recognition of the existing reality: that Prosfygika is not an empty space, but a vibrant Community of people, with social structures and a historical presence spanning decades.

The Mayor of Athens, by virtue of his institutional role, has the power to prevent the continuation of the regional governor’s and the government’s plans for the reppression and destruction of the Community, as he is the official responsible for social housing and the licensing of any construction work.

For our part, we expect this initiative not to remain merely on paper; we expect words to be turned into action and the willingness to engage in dialogue to be immediately translated into formal invitations.

Pending further developments, we are suspending the entry of new hunger strikers, as we committed to doing during the press conference we held at on May 25, 2026. Hunger strikers Aristotelis Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne continue the struggle, awaiting—as we all do—a positive response from all parties as soon as possible to find a solution.

We continue to fight so that Prosfygika remain a vibrant Community, a social project of social housing, solidarity, of common benefit, and collective memory.

Pressrelease – 130 DAYS OF HUNGER STRIKE AS AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CALLS FOR HALT TO EVICTIONS

UN RIGHTS MECHANISM REVIEWS ATHENS CASE WHILE THE GREEK STATE ANNOUNCES CONTINUATION OF EVICTION PLANS

Local and International mobilisations increasing ahead of Brussels actions

ATHENS, Greece — June 14, 2026

Aristotelis Chantzis has entered the 130th day of a hunger strike in defence of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in central Athens, as concerns continue to grow over plans to evict resdients and redevelop the historic neighbourhood.

The second hunger striker, Suzon Doppagne, who joined the protest in solidarity on May 1, is approaching 50 days of her hunger strike. More members of the community -some of them with serious health problems -have also announced plans to join the hunger strike.

The protest comes in response to a redevelopment plan approved by the Regional Government of Attica in June 2025 that would lead to the eviction of the approximately 400 residents of the Prosfygika neighborhood. Residents include families with children, refugees, elderly people, oncology patients and their relatives, and people participating in rehabilitation programs. Supporters of the Community say no concrete rehousing guarantees have been presented.

The case has increasingly drawn international attention from human rights organisations, legal experts, academics, and housing advocates. Last week, a delegation of the community went to Brussels, where they had meetings with over 20 members from the European Parliament (MEP). In a press conference on June 4, the lawyer and member of the Committee for the Promotion and Defense of the Community and its collective Memory, Nikos Kolokotronis described that all MEPs committed to supporting the community and their struggle for justice. This includes the submission of questions to the European Parliament, a joint announcement of their support for the Community and the priorization of this struggle, due to the urgency of the Hunger Strike. They will emphasize that the EU-funded contract to evict the community relies on severe irregularities, such as a violation of the partnership principles.

On April 27 2026, Amnesty International called for the suspension of forced eviction plans and raised concerns regarding possible violations of fundamental and constitutionally protected human rights. Amnesty urged authorities to review the demands raised by the hunger strikers and residents in line with international human rights standards.

Additionally an official complaint has also been submitted to the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing, who has reportedly taken up the case following concerns regarding potential human rights implications connected to the planned eviction process.

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika calls for participation in a demontration in Syntagma Square, Athens on June 14, 12pm and for national and international actions in solidarity with the struggle. In their statetement the community declares:

“We declare once again that this fight will continue to the end. From the first moment, we knew it was a struggle for life or death, dignity or submission, resistance or destruction. (…) The collective decision of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika and our two comrades who have decided to go beyond their limits, to fight until the end, with an understanding of the cost and unwavering faith in our victory.”

CALL FOR INTERNATIONALIST TO COME TO STAY IN THE COMMUNITY IN THE SUMMER – THE PERIOD OF HIGH RISK OF ATTACK

Share-Pic for the open Call

The Community of Squatted Prosfygika in this period of time is facing the 5th and largest attack in its 16 years of existance.

The Regional Government of Attica, together with the Ministry of Culture and the Unemployment Service plan the „redevelopment“ of the Prosfygika Neighbourhood, which is in reality a full scale eviction plan of the first four blocks funded by the European Union (Link)

The community declared the defense of the Prosfygika neighborhood at any cost, even with its own lives – giving a bold resistance, with clear demands; at the forefront a hungerstrike until death for the defense of life, that was started on February 5th by Aristotelis Chantzis, joined on May 1st by Suzon Doppagne and will include further members and residents of the Community.

Now we enter the summer period, which is in Athens a time of repression. We call for internationalists to spend the summer in Prosfygika and support the ongoing resistance against the state plans of eviction of the Community.

We call on individuals and collectives to come in the summer for the amount of time that they are capable. As the strategy of the defense of the community happens in many different ways, we ask comrades to:

  • actively defend the community: The constant presence of repression forces in the Neighborhood and the threat of attacks require constant presence in the Community from members and internationalist solidarians and support in guarding of the community.
  • strengthen the 23 structures that function autonomously, inside a holistic model of autonomy; based on the collective needs of the Community f. ex. the collective bakery, the gardening structure, technical structure, food logistics.…
  • participate in the restoration of the buildings : Since last autumn, the Community has announced a selforganized, self financed, full renovation of the facades of the buildings as a basic axis of social self-defense. Individuals and collectives with all levels of experience in all crafts can participate in this
  • building barrications of the buildings, supporting with expanding the defensive barrication of buildings. Individuals with welding and metal work experience are especially welcome to join.
  • support the organization of social kitchens and nutrition of the neighborhood. We call for collectives and individuals with experience in social kitchens to come and contribute with their initiative.
  • contribute to the internationalist #saveprosfygika campaign for example through media works.

As internationalist solidarity has always been a pillar of the struggle in Prosfygika, it showed its strength again in the last months, with a great participation of solidarians from around the world. We call internationalists to come based on the idea of internationalism to connect our struggle, to practice solidarity and to learn from the spaces we are visiting.

In this phase of struggle every move of solidarity, every person that will come to support will be essential for our victory in the communal fight of life and death.

On the 3.-5. of June the delegation from the Community of Squatted Prosfygika will go to Brussels.

Why? Because the Community is under a concrete threat of eviction, funded with ESPA/NSRF funds from the EU.

Goal of this delegation is,

  • to make the struggle of the Community known towards members of the European Parliament and in this way increase the pressure on the greek state,
  • to ask for statements of solidarity
  • to show the serious gaps of the contract such as various unanswered legal questions:
  • Unresolved issues regarding the legality of the ownership status of the buildings.
  • Substantial, unauthorized changes to the original agreement and funding structure.
  • Alleged irregularities concerning Regional NSRF funding procedures.
  • Blatant incompatibilities between the approved project and the officially approved restoration study of 2018.
  • The absolute necessity to protect the historical and architectural character of the Prosfygika complex, officially recognized as a protected modern monument due to its Bauhaus architecture and its role in the modern history of Greece.
    Programme
  • On the 03/06 there will be a meeting with Members of the European Parliament, from 4-6pm a demonstration in front of the European Parliament and in the evening a community event.
  • On the 04/06 at 4pm we will have a press conference.

For the time in between and on the 5th there will be time to meet with NGOs and other organizations, politicians, groups and people, who are willing to listen and support the community.

We ask our internationalist network to

  • Reach out to those who might know Members of the European Parliament and invite them for the meeting with us on the 3. of June
  • Contacts to human rights organizations / activists / groups / public figures who are based in Brussels or willing to come to meet there
  • Call for journalists that are based in Brussels or willing to come to join for the press conference
  • For everyone who can: COME TO BRUSSELS!
