The Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, announced on friday, June 12th, that the Municipality of Athens is requesting a dialogue on the situation of the Prosfygika housing complex on Alexandras Avenue. He proposes an open and organized dialogue including the government and the regional department of Attika. The statement also calls on political parties to take a clear position so that the loss of further human rights and human lives can be avoided.
This development is certainly influenced by the formal question on the legitimacy of the EU funding that was submitted to the European Commission by 33 members of the European Parliament from the Socialists, the Greens and the Left.
A harsh and costly struggle of the Hunger Strikers Aristotelis Chantzis (Day 132) and Suzon Doppagne (Day 47) and a massive movement of solidarity across Greece and internationally led to this move.
The Community published a statement on this (https://saveprosfygika.gr/index.php/en/2026/06/15/statement-by-the-community-of-squatted-prosfygika-of-alexandras-av-regarding-the-latest-statement-by-athens-mayor-charis-doukas/).
We regard the initiative of Doukas as a positive step, even though it is long overdue. The words have to be followed by actions as soon as possible.
We continue to struggle to ensure that the Prosfygika neighborhood remains a living community: a social project of social housing, solidarity, public benefit and collective memory.
