Athens 03.07.2026: After 5 months of continuous protest, the Community of Squatted Prosfygika achieved a multilayered victory. This week, the European Commission answered the parliamentary question about the legitimacy of the eviction plans, which was asked by 33 members of the European Parliament from different parties. The European Commission, who was supposedly responsible for the financing of the gentrification plan, confirmed the illegality of eviction and the absence of funding; no money was ever granted for this plan, contrary to the claims of the regional government.
In their answer they said clearly: “Greek authorities have informed the Commission that no call has yet been launched to include the ‘Prosfygika’ project in the regional programme ‘Attica’. As no operation has been selected for EU funding, the Commission has not received project-specific information.”
“The struggle has won. The struggle continues.”
This achievement followed the announced victory of the hunger strike. Suzon Doppagne and Aristotelis Chantzis, members of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika in Athens, announced on 24/6/2026 the decision to end their hunger strike until death after 140 and 55 days. Prior to this, in an urgent meeting, the municipality of Athens voted for a resolution addressed to the regional government and the Greek state, demanding the cancellation of the eviction plan and recognition the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. Furthermore, the resolution states that all residents of Prosfygika will remain in their homes and accepts the phased restoration of the buildings as proposed by the Community.
Olga Nassis, member of the European Left warns, that “despite on the victory achieved at the municipal level, the danger is far from over. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis irresponsibly attacked Prosfygika, labeling the community a “major blight” and sinisterly stating that “the competent authorities will answer regarding operational matters”. This is a crystal-clear message implying the intent to deploy police forces to resolve an eminently social issue through coercion and repression.”
Other then that, Aristotelis Chantzis is still in acute danger. In the latest update about his health, it was announced that Aristotelis Chantzis was incubated in the ICU due to severe respiratory failures. They announced that all those with political responsibility, especially Nikos Hardalias and Kyriakos Mitsotakis, bear full responsibility for the development of his state of health and any outcome it has.
Over the next 6 days, people from over eight countries will drive together through different cities of the Balkans, in which locals have initiated solidarity actions for the Community of Squatted Prosfygika. Since the start of the hunger strike on February 5th, solidarity movements were built in over thirty cities, covering four different continents. Until now, they announced stops in Ljubljana (3.7), Zagreb (4.7), Belgrade (5.7), Sofia (6.7.), Skopje (7.7) and Thessaloniki (8.7).
Ultimately they want to arrive in the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to support the self-managed renovation of the historical buildings, the maintenance of the 22 structures that are covering the needs of more than 400 people from over 27 nationalities including 50 minors, elderly and people with severe illnesses.
In their statement on the first demonstration of the tour, which happened on July 2nd in front of the Greek embassy, they made the following announcement: “Together with the support of our comrades in Austria, Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Albania, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Macedonia, we will stage interventions in front of various Greek embassies to make it clear that we stand united against the eviction plans, that the struggle for life and humanity knows no borders and continues in every squat, every square, every social center and in every heart of every comrade.
“As an internationalist brigade, representing the global network of internationalists who have fought alongside us for the past five months, we will travel together to the Community of Squatted Prosfygika to provide practical support and to strengthen the connections – new and old – forged in the heat of this battle. We will defend the victory of the Community of Squatted Prosfygika with our words, our actions, and our physical presence.”
