The Committee for the Promotion and Defense of the Prosfygika Community and its collective memory is a solidarity committee that supports the struggle of the residents of the Prosfygika neighborhood on Alexandras Avenue. It is composed of lawyers, engineers, architects, archaeologists, journalists, photojournalists, filmmakers, and others. Its main work is the creation and promotion of the #saveprosfygika campaign.
The campaign aims to support the struggle for the genuine preservation of the Prosfygika — both as buildings and as a living community of people — while also safeguarding the historical memory that power has continuously and blatantly mutilated and distorted over time.
We seek to highlight all the reasons why such a community of struggle must remain alive and why its historical memory must not be looted. At the same time, we expose and deconstruct all the hypocritical arguments invoked by the state and authorities, showing that in reality they are not interested in preserving the buildings, but in exploiting them and, of course, dismantling a center of resistance.
The Committee will soon announce plans for the real preservation of the historic buildings, and through the campaign will contribute to the community’s resistance and struggle. It is clear that whatever does not resist is displaced or “crushed,” while those who resist have the possibility of victory — or at the very least, the dignity of a just struggle.
The Prosfygika neighborhood on Alexandras is under threat. And with it, the hope for another world is at risk. The time has come for all of us to do our part! From the ground up! Here and now!
